Start up problem with printer

I've had my printer for a couple of years and have never had any problems. Tonight it start making a grinding sound and I got an error message "Scanner failure. Turn power off then on again." I wasn't trying to scan anything, and I've turned the power off and on again several times. Always the same thing -- this heaving, grinding noise that lasts for a couple of minutes, then I get the same error message. I don't think the machine is kaputt, because I've got my phone hooked up through it and I'm able to get a dial tone (the line goes to the printer, then a line from the printer goes to the modem. The whole problem when I hooked up a new phone, but I don't know why that should have caused an upset -- the DSL filters were undisturbed. Can anyone offer any help?

Yes, a grinding noise as if the carriage is trying to move, but is stuck, or something.

Yep! Same problem. Started about the same time I hooked up my DSL.. Makes a "god-awful" grinding noice as soon as the power is turned on and I get a scanner error message and then a "turn off power" and restart message but it does the same thing each time. Can anyone help?

Your scanner glass is get dirty and all scanners make a self diagnostic program when we turn on the printers.
At this point, you will hear a little noise from the scanner carriage lamp, witch is doing self calibrating. In this calibrating time the scanner unit "read" the white and the black levels, and the white (in your case) is not white, is quite gray because is dirty.

The solution is a very simple, but require much skill.

You must disassembly the scanner unit, remove any screw you see (you need an no. 2 phillips screwdriver) and very gently remove the upper side (with glass) from the rest of scanner unit. Please note that is several plastic fasteners to be disposed.

after you remove the glass (with a plastic frame) you get a small tissue of cotton and soaking with an windows cleaner solutions. Gently clean the BOTH surfaces of scanner glass.

For assembly follow the reverse procedure.

Beware to the glass, it has only 3 mm thickness. Don't broke!

Like I sad: simple problem, but require much skill. If you think is to difficult for you, please go to the service.

In the middle of printing out 8x10 photos, it stopped picking up the photo paper. Makes a grinding sound twice, then beeps error.

Hello Lynell,
Unfortunately, printers only last for about 3 years or up to 5 years if it's a more expensive model. Try a Google search or YouTube search for DIY repairs on the model you own. You may find some helpful information on how to repair your printer. Or, it may be time to get a new one. If that's the case, see if Best Buy will give you a trade in price on something new. Best of luck!

My HP LaserJet 4L printer just makes a grinding sound-won't print

That printer has a gear on the motor that cracks. You can fix it with a new or used motor. Or get a different machine on craigslist. Thank you, Steven 805-520-3003

I have a epson artisan 800 I'm tring to fax from the automatic feeder but it keeps making a grinding sound and then it says paper jam but paper never even went through

I took apart my artison 800 with 'paper jam' error and grinding noise. Sadly enough, it is the plastic gear attached to the stepper motor which is slipping and making the grinding noise. I tried to glue it and it worked once or twice and failed again. It is a design flaw and Epson should repair this for free if they are honest about this problem. Ir is not a user-caused problem.

Grinding noice when printing

Most likely problem is the Fixer Gear, seems to be an issue with these printers. Part number is LJ7416001 but does not look to be the easiest to Replace

Canon PIXMA 530 grinds away

I had a persistant grinding noise about 30 seconds after the printer finished printing. It's been going on about 2 months. I did one thing which seemed to work. So try opening the cover on the back of the machine by lifting upward on the gray lever in the middle of the back of the machine. Leave this cover open during and after printing. The grinding noise went away.

Canon MP530 Makes Grinding Noise when printing starts

I had this same problem and called tech support. Instead of sending a new printer they had me

1 remove print Cartridges
2 remove print head
3 replace print head
4 replace print Cartridges
5 unplug power from the wall

This seemed to fix the problem.....for me anyway.....for now.

hope it helps

Grinding noise on startup

Problem The Resume light continues to blink after the paper jam is cleared.
OR
The carriage is stuck or making a grinding noise. Solution 1. Lift the top cover to the printer. 2. Turn the printer off and then on again. 3. Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer when the grinding noise starts. 4. Move the carriage towards the middle of the printer (this procedure may take a couple of tries to get the timing correct). 5. Take out the cartridges and close the top cover. Turn the printer back on! 6. Reconnect the power cord. 7. Open the top cover, reinstall the cartridges, and then close the top cover

Makes loud sounds

I had the same problem with the loud grinding sound. The gears on the cartridge(s) is not turning but rather stripping creating a grinding sound. Reinstall all of the toner cartridges. If that doesn't work, pull each cartridge out and manually turn the gear on the cartridge. If the problem persists, you may need to purchase a new toner cartridge.
