Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Pump problems I had a fairly light load of dishes that needed to run so I thought I'll put some plastic fruit on the top rack to also get clean. Well, when the load was done and I opened the door everything was covered and I mean everything with a whitish substance aka wax! One of the fruit was made of wax an melted all over the entire interior of the dishwasher. We had 30 people now arriving for dinner so I just left it all alone. I should have run it again immediately but I didn't. Now after removing as much wax as possible and my husband cleared the hoses mostly we can't get the pump tp drain and can't figure a way to get at it. The warranty has expired-just.

Hi murrie825,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your problem is: you can't get the pump to drain and can't figure a way to get at it.

It sure sounds like the pump is clogged. To access it you have to remove the d/w. I don't recomend this for the average homeowner. You might consider the Repair Directory for a repairman. Wish I could be more help.

Dishwasher is not cleaning, is there a diagram available to inspect/replace filter, check water pump, etc.

Take the dish rack out. look at the back bottom of the dishwasher. you will most likely see a screen. Check if there is food, or a toothpick or a thin sheet of plastic wrap covering the screen. Remove it. Clean the screen and bottom of the dishwasher of any debris. Put the rack back in. Load the dishwasher, put in the soap and turn it on. You should have nice clean dishes.

A couple of thoughts:

1) It could be a gasket somewhere starting to break down. Check your door seal.

2) Food particles could have gotten caught somewhere in the drain hose, or something, and then turned black with mold and bacteria, then when you wash, they get siphoned back into the dishwasher if the flap which composes the anti-siphon check valve on the drain hose is starting to stick open.

Try putting a cup of bleach in the top rack and run a complete cycle with no other dishes in it. Then, load up some plastic dishes and wash them as normal. See if that helps. If it does, replace your check valve.

Also, insure that your drain hose is looped up above the bottom of your sink to prevent debris from your garbage disposal backing up into your dishwasher.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Whirlpool Gold Dishwasher- bowls in center of top rack are full of water, bowls in corners have almost no or no water in them and dishes on top rack are dirty. Dishes on bottom rack are clean.

First try running a cycle of "Dishwasher Magic". You can find this at Walmart for around 5 bucks. This will clean and condition the inside of the dishwasher and the inside of the pump and motor.
If this doesnt help...and the plastic and/or metal components in the dishwasher seem to look and feel intact..this would lead me to believe there is an issue with the pump and motor. These are sold as 1 unit or as seperate units depending on the model. Changing it is simple if you know how to dissconnect and reconnect a dishwasher. Take into consideration the age of the unit, the cost of the part, and the cost of a total replacement.

There is a plastic cone on the back, bottom of the top rack. The cone must push into the water tube in the back wall otherwise noo water will get to the top. Make sure the clips holding the cone in place are positioned correctly.

After wash cycle and rinsed cycle there were suds

Make certain you do not use dish soap when rinsing the dishes. Make sure you only use DISHWASHER soap when running the DW.
In fact, there is no need to rinse dishes. Remove visible scraps and put them in the DW. If it is a quality DW it will clean your dishes. Do not crowd the dishes in the DW. Most JennAir DW's are quality. Make sure the top rack can get washing action from the bottom spray arm. No pots or other water stopping utensils on the bottom rack.

My dishwasher is leaving a lot of residue on dishes

I had the same problem and fixed it by disassembling the lower spray arm and return filter, and cleaning all the junk out.
Most dishwashers have 'risers' that bring the water up to the top sprayer or arm located under the top rack. If the recirculating pump is plugged even a little there won't be enough volume or pressure to get the water up there.
Test this by putting a dry muffin pan in the top rack, flat, and running the dishwasher for a bit. If there is no water on the top (or the bottom) either the top sprayer or the sprayer arm underneath the top rack is not getting enough volume.
To fix this you need to clean out the screen and filter, where the water returns to be recirculated. If you don't have any confidence to remove the parts and clean it out yourself, get an appliance repair person to do the job.

Kitchenaid, new dishwasher, stopped cleaning top rack dishes

The problem most people encounter with dishwashers is a simple inability to get the dishes clean. There might be stuck-on food or residue from the detergent. A water pressure problem may be the culprit. You may need to replace the water intake valve. Another common problem is mineral build-up. If your house has hard water, the mineral build-up can clog the water jets. Clear each jet with a wire or pin, and run an empty load with some vinegar in the detergent dispenser about once a month.

Sometimes, the dishwasher has problems draining properly. There could be a clog in the drain hose, or a problem with the pump. It's also possible that the dishwater is getting too sudsy, and sensors in the washer aren't detecting the soap foam as water. This causes it to shut down the drain cycle too early. Just use less detergent.

Kitchen aid dishwasher doesn't clean dishes in the top rack

Sounds like you have 1 of 2 problems. Either your pump is clogged or you need a bigger drain loop.
