Internal hdd.
a. check:
1. ide cable/sata cable is properly seated.
2. your jumper configuration is correct (slave, single, cableselect)
3. your power cable is properly seated in the back of the harddrive.

external hdd.
b. check
1. your firewire/usb connection is properly plugged.
2. your power cable for the hdd is connected and the enclosure power switch is on.

After install window not show may hard drive


Right-Click "Computer", Manage, Storage/Disk Management. What you see here is what you have, or at least what Windows thinks is connected. If you have a missing hard drive, check your hard drive connections.

How To Upgrade Your Own PC Hard Drive


At this point, the computer is powered off and I'm ready to add the new hard drive as a second hard drive. Since there is only one hard drive installed at the start of the upgrade, the old hard drive is already installed as the master hard drive on the first IDE cable. The new hard drive is added as the slave hard drive on the first IDE cable (the same IDE cable as the old hard drive, but using the slave IDE connector).

The first step is to set the jumpers on the back of the hard drive into the slave position. These pictures show the back of the hard drive which also contains a label indicating what each jumper settting means.

To get a close-up in which you can actually read the jumper label in the picture, I've taken two separate close-ups of the label and placed them side-by-side with the first showing the left-hand side of the label and the second showing the right-hand side of the label. It can be confusing to know how to set the jumpers just from looking at the label. As you read across the left-hand and right-hand pictures, you'll notice that a setting for "DEVICE 0 (MASTER)" appears twice. Same for "DEVICE 1 (SLAVE)". But the first mention applies to "16 HEADS" and the second mention applies to "32GB Clip". The Deskstar 120GXP Jumper Description does a good job of clearing up the confusion, so rather than repeat it here I'll just strongly recommend you give it a look.

Here are links to jumper information for other popuplar hard drive manufacturers. Western Digital Jumper Setting Information Maxtor. Once there, click on the particular hard drive model. Then select "Jumper Settings" and/or "Jumper Guide" in the [Technical Specifications] field. Seagate Jumper Setting Information. Look near the bottom of the page.
The default, shipped, jumper setting for the IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80GB jumpers is in the "16 HEAD", "DEVICE 0 (MASTER)" position and this is how mine arrived. Here's a close-up showing the jumpers circled in red. The IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80GB hard drive has nine jumper pins and two jumpers. The jumpers are white and rectangular in shape and are shown inserted over two pairs of pins. Notice the pins covered by the jumpers match the jumper label diagram as shown in the side-by-side pictures for "DEVICE 0 (MASTER)" next to "16 HEADS" . This is the correct jumper setting to use for the hard drive after the hard drive has been cloned and it is ready to become the Master hard drive.

But at this point in the hard drive upgrade procedure the new had drive is being added to my computer as the slave hard drive. Although the jumpers are small, you should be able to use just your fingers and move the jumpers such they are set into the slave position. In my case, that means setting them as shown here. Again, it can be confusing because the same picture shows, and right above the jumpers themselves, a jumper diagram labeled "DEVICE 1 (SLAVE)" which shows a different jumper setting. But that "DEVICE 1 (SLAVE)" jumper setting is for "32GB CLIP". Some computers (i.e., older computers) cannot use the whole 80GB and this jumper setting "clips" the hard drive down to a 32GB slave hard drive. My computer can use the full capacity of the hard drive. You'll notice the jumper positions in this picture match the jumper diagram for "DEVICE 1 (SLAVE)" next to "16 HEADS" shown in the previous side-by-side pictures.

Not all hard drives have the same jumper options and labeling as the Deskstar 120GXP. For example, here is a Western Digital WD1200JB (120GB) hard drive. Notice that the labeling is on top of the hard drive rather than on the rear. In addiition, there is only one jumper since the Western Digital does not support re-configuring the number of heads in the drive or the total size of the drive.

Hard Drive Upgrade Install Guide
The hard drive has holes on the side which are used for the mounting screws as shown here. Like most hard drives, the IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80GB has places for 6 screws, three on each side. On the IBM Deskstar 120GXP 80GB hard drive (and this was also true for my old IBM Deskstar 75GXP 45GB hard drive), some screws could be longer than others. In fact, three of the six screws could be longer since they had more clearance to the hard drive itself. For my hard drive upgrade and install, I used a total of six round-head machine screws, size 6-32. Three of the screws were 1/4 inch in length and three of the screws were 3/8 inch in length. Here's a picture taken inside My Super PC before the new hard drive is installed. The case I use, the Antec KS-282, holds the 3.5 inch drives such as the hard drives inside a "drive cage". The drive cage is handy since it makes installing the hard drives a little easier. This picture shows the drive cage circled in red and the old hard drive which will eventually be replaced circled in blue. Click on the picture to see it enlarged.

Here's a closer view showing the contents of the drive cage before the new hard drive is installed and still containing the old hard drive. The backside of the old hard drive looks similar to the backside of the new had drive since both are IBM Deskstar hard drives, just different models. You can see the backside of the hard drive is in three sections. The leftmost section is where the IDE cable connects. The jumper pins are in the middle. You can see the jumpers on the old drive are set in the master position, which makes sense since it's the only hard drive in My Super PC. The rightmost section is for the power connector. Install The Second Hard DriveLet's look again at the interior shot. I've circled the slave IDE connector. There are three connectors on the IDE cable and they are color coded. I've circled in red the gray connector on the IDE cable. This is the connector for the slave hard drive. The master hard drive connector is black and is still plugged into the old hard drive in the drive cage. The connector on the IDE cable which connects to the motherboard is colored blue. The new hard drive will plug into this gray connector as the slave device. And you'll need a free 4-pin power connector like the one shown to connect the new hard drive to the power supply. Click on any picture to enlarge it. Like many things that connect inside the computer, both the IDE connector (the gray one, in this case) and the power connector are "keyed" by their shapes or some other means so that they cannot be plugged in "upside down". For example, if you enlarge the picture of the gray connector it's easy to see that the center of the connector includes a plastic bulge and a blocked out pin receptable to prevent it from being plugged in incorrectly.

Using Windows Disk Management Utility to Manage Internal and External Disks


Disk management utility will help you see all the drives that are connected to your computer, including internal hard drives, CD or DVD Drives, and removable storage like USB sticks and external hard drives. Using this utility, you can check for attached drives that are not visible in windows when attached to your computer. You can also format drives, change drive letters, mark a partition as active and delete partitions. A word on caution about using the Disk Management Utility: This utility can cause destruction of data. If you are not sure of what you are looking at and uncomfortable with using this utility you should consult with an advanced user before making any changes to drives using this utility.


The Disk Management utility can be accessed in two different ways.
#1- You can open the Control Panel,
Click on Administrative Tools,
Click on Computer Management and the Computer Management window will open.
#2- Right click on you “My Computer” Icon
A menu will open
Chose “Manage”
The Computer Management window will open

The Computer Management window is broken down into 3 sections.

The first section on the left side of the window shows a menu. Disk Management is on the lower portion of the menu.

The right side is separated into two sections, top and bottom. The top portion shows a list of active drives on the computer. The lower portion shows all drives connected to the computer. CD or DVD drives that have not disk will not show as active drives on the top section, but can be seen in the lower section.

The lower section will show the drive description, drive size and drive condition (online or off line) in small box on the left side of that section. Disk drives will designate a “Drive” and a number. Drive 0 is usually your internal hard drive. Then it would list drive 1, drive 2, etc, depending on how many internal and external drive sources you have connected to your computer. Then it will list your CD drives and generally show their drive letter assignments.

Next to the smaller section described above, is a larger section which shows the driver letter, size of the driver and condition (if working correctly will show “healthy”)
This is the area you can right click and get a menu that will allow you to open, explore, mark the partition as active, change the driver letter, format the drive or delete a partition. (A note of caution here. Changing the driver letter on your main hard drive partition will cause windows to stop functioning. The main hard drive, or hard drive partition, is normally given the letter “C”.) A hard drive may show two or more partitions with separate drive letters designated for each partition.

A drive this is having a problem may show that it needs to be formatted (status as Unformatted). This can be done from this window. An external drive, whether it is a hard drive or CD/DVD drive, can have the letter designator change done if you want to organize your external drives. There are times when a drive will not show up because the drive letter that they are programmed to use are taken. Most USB drives are programmed to us the letters “F” or “G”. In this area, you can assign the USB drive any drive letter that is not being used and this will make it visible in windows.

Emachines D4362 starts only after many button pushes


Sounds like you might have corrupt window system files or the machine might not be recognizing the hard drive.
Press the DEL button to go into the BIOS. Go to the section that shows you the hard drive. If it doesn't show you a hard drive model and shows none then your hard drive is bad and would need to be replaced. If your hard drive is recognized in the BIOS then you'll need to try and reinstall windows. If you can't get windows reinstalled then the hard drive is bad at that point as well.

My hard drive is full


Have you tried Cleaning out old files, Defragment your Hard Drive

got to:
Start>Computer
RIGHT Click on your C:

Your C: Properties should show up.

Press the Disk Cleanup button.

This next screen will show up displaying the Cleanup progress.

After that is finished, you will get this screen showing files that can be deleted.

Check the boxes that you want to remove the files from and click OK.

Now that is one way to free up some space.

Now on to Defragging your Hard Drive.

go to:
Start>Computer
RIGHT Click on your C:

Your C: Properties should show up.

Click the "Tools" tab and you will see this.

Click the "Defragment Now.." button, follow the instructions and let it run.

Depending on how bad your files are fragmented, it could take 10mins to a couple, maybe even several hours.

I put my old hard drive in as a slave, vista recognises it in management and device manager but doesnt recognise it in my computer?


it might need to be formatted, right click on the computer and click on manage, click on disk management and format the disk.

Installing Hiotachi Deskstar 400gb hard drive


in order to set it to slave you first needs to make sure the cable that u hoodked up to the hard drive is the slave not secondary then boot the computer to the bios and then under the ide section section you need to ensure that the hard drive is recognized as primary slave it will show the hard drive as a primary or a secondary that will let you you that u have the cable hooked up to the harddrive right if not usee the other connector on the same cabel and repeat the bios settings i know it sounds hard but it really is not good luck !!!!

Error 0x400 100 130000 1002 is showing and I can't even open the pc


Error 0x400 100130000 1002

This issue persists if the hard drive has bad sectors.
Run a Hard drive test in BIOS and check if you receive 'Read Failure' it is shows hard drive is defective.
