you have to have a timing light gun when light is on its like a strobe light and pointed to timing belt it shows the lines that need to be lined up together
The timing marks are stamped into the head and in the cam pulley, also on the crank and the case, find them and paint them white so you can see them, the new belts have the marks on the belt, they will line up, If they don't , you got it wrong, You can do this without spinning the cams or crank and losing the marks, as long as the belt marks line up, you will be all set. Put the pin in the tensioner before removing the belt. Did you change the water pump? And I think the engine is 3.2L. Get it in there and pull the pin, It should be right on. Turn over the engine by hand a couple times to make sure it comes around on the marks. If it is wrong, it will go about 11 or 12 miles, and you will need a new engine. Hope this helps.
Cams will point straight up to match marks on housing and crank will be
at about 1 o'clock where mark on crank pulley will line up with mark on
oil pump casing
Heres two diagrams for aligning the timing gears for timing belt, this is for a 1999 rodeo with the 3.2 engine, hope this helps, one diagram is for the cams and the other is for the crank gear,
