Turn the phone off for few hours by removing the battery then return it and switch it on again, wait for about 15-20 minutes and enter the correct code again, it will be accepted and keep it in mind for the next time.

it seems that the code the phone is requesting is the unlocking code to use it with different network.
Am i right to think that your husband is trying to use a sim card from a different provider?
Normally most providers when they give you or sell you a phone they lock it to their own network so you can't use it with other providers. If this is a contract phone and you have already finished the contract commitment, you can phone O2 and they willl have to provide you with the code that you need.
If this is the case, be carefull when you speak to them, don't let thhem take advantage and deny this code.
if you need any more help, please get in touch and i will do my best to help you.
SIM pin code: This is a pin code that locks the sim card until you enter the correct code. This protects your account, even if your sim is put into another handset. To reset it, you need the PUK code: Pin Unlock Code (PUK) If you miss key (or forget) your SIM pin code, and enter the wrong one 3-5 times in a row, the SIM will lock up, and you’ll need to enter the PUK unlock code to release it. You should ask your Network Service Provider for this code when you need it. Don’t try to guess it, because after a few wrong guesses, the SIM card will be permanently disabled. Phone Security Code: This locks the handset, as opposed to the sim card. You can also set some handsets to only accept a “new” sim if the phone security code is entered. To reset it, you need the Master code code: Master Reset Code
Sometimes known as the Master Code, this allows you to unlock a handset if you have entered the Security Code wrongly too many times. Which is the one that you want?
IMEI: 35282601890424512 has too many digits. IMEI has only 15 digits. It's needed to calculate the Master code which will reset the Security code.
