The ribbon cable from the display to the main board is a common problem as well as some surface mounted fuses on the main board. There are around 5 or 6 of them that may need to be checked. As you must know by now, they are very difficult to open up and work on. I have seen many times when a owner of these will try to fix it there self and cause other problems accidentally. If you are going to try and check those surface mounted fuses I can try to help you with that. I have the service manual in PDF format and if you contact me I can send it to you by email. It would be a great help since it has the schematics and board diagrams in it. I can also just give you whatever part numbers you may need to order the correct parts. This is a very difficult unit to work on, I have repaired many of them over the last few years. If the problem is not those fuses or ribbon cable, you will be better served to have an experienced technician look at it. It is very easy to damage the ribbon cable when you replace it, so that is possible it is causing your problem now.

Let me know if you would like further help from me.

The surface mounted fuses in this unit look like small surface mounted resistors, they are not glass. They are about 1/8 inch or less in length and are white in color.

  • Dave DeGain
    Dave DeGain Sep 22, 2008

Check fuses with ref #'s FU154, FU803, FU805. These are all next to the 2 connectors with ref #'s CN803 and CN805. You need a ohm meter, and they should all check at zero ohms. If they are open, or if they check at anything more than what your meter could be off by, then they are probably bad. Those are just the first to check, if you need to check more, let me know and please address the post to me, ie. @tech48 or @Dave.

It would also be helpful if you listed an email address I could send you the service manual to. But it is about 21 Meg in size, so you need to know if your email server will allow this size of an attachment. If not, I will upload it to a website for you to download it, but I still need your email address to give you that information, I cannot post links to my own websites here on FixYa.

I am going to get some sleep right now, so you will not hear from me again for about 8 or 10 hours.

Please address your post to whoever you wish to converse with, if you do not do that, everybody will assume you are writing to somebody else.

    Thanks,

    Dave

  • Dave DeGain
    Dave DeGain Sep 22, 2008

Those fuses I listed in the last post are the ones near the 2 connectors for the ribbon cable on the main board. The ref #'s should be printed on the board near the connectors, as well as the ref #'s for the fuses. As I said before, these fuses are very small and are surface mounted. There are many more fuses on the board, and if you see more that look like the ones I pointed out, check them.

  • Dave DeGain
    Dave DeGain Sep 25, 2008

The surface mounted fuses I have told you to check will not look burnt even if they are bad. They look just fine even when they have blown. They will not look loose on the board, they are soldered on to the board. You need to check them with an ohm meter. If you do not have an ohm meter, you can not check them. These fuses are the most likely problem for your unit. I have experience fixing these units, so you can ignore me if you like, but I know what I know what I am telling you is correct. It would also be nice you could please address your post to the expert you are wanting to communicate with. I have no idea if you are wanting to communicate with me or with somebody else. As I told you before, I can give you the service manual in PDF format which would help you greatly with troubleshooting this unit. If you are not willing to check these fuses your best bet is to just take to a service center that can repair it. You can expect the cost to be around $200. Like I said before, I have actually fixed these units at my shop which is an authorized Pioneer service center, so you might want to consider that what I am telling you is right.

Opens and closes is a ribbon problem symptom,i encounter like this problem before.I only cut the old ribbon, and i doubled it to the new ribbon, 2 one half inch, and put at each end of the contacts,so it will thick, and when you inserted it, it will hold firmly to the contact.Sometimes the replacement is very thin, and that DVD works again...

Hopes it may help you;

Hi,
'
Your description is significant:

  • OPENS AND CLOSES - electrical/mechanical works, their is power going into the unit;
  • NO SOUND - if the unit is not switching on this is to be expected;
  • BUTTONS DON'T RESPOND - again, if the unit is not switching on, this is to be expected;
  • THE SCREEN DOESNT SHOW ANYTHING - same as above. Additionally, it could be that the CCF lamps/inverter are defective are simply not engaging since the unit will not swtich on.
If I may add to the other posts, why not try a reset. To my knowledge this particular model has a reset button. If this likewise fails, then in most likelihood, the controller circuitry has been messed up. To effect repairs of this nature, a service manual or at the very least a schematic diagram with voltage readings would be essential. Foremost to check would be the standby B+ most likely a +5VDC.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Hey There I have the model that Came out after that one.
I have had some problems but I never took it apart to replace the
Ribbon.

  • Check to make sure that the ribbion (if colored) is the same as the old one
  • do you have the wiring diagram/
  • Is there a Firmware CD that Pioneer has?
  • My Pioneer has firmware (Version 1.233) But that was done by the Factory
  • You make need to check the Fuses in the rear of the Stereo
OK does your screen get stuck when you open it ..... Example when you first turn on the "ACC"
and the stereo powers up. DO you have it set on Auto or Manual.
That model may have a small Lever/Switch that is on the inside . The way it works is when the
screen is sliding out of the sleeve it Trips the Lever or it keeps contact to send a signal to the Screen
to activate it. There may be a chance that you have disabled it or maybe when you put it back together
you over looked it.

Note: Check all FUSES in the Car and stereo...... If all else take of the Battery Terminals and Reset
the Memory.... 5mins should do it.

Thank You
Jayson

Chula Vista I new a few people out there I lived in -->( La Mirada) Long Time AGO

Well if there is a chance that you do get to work.

    Regular Maintenance
I put a thin layer of grease on the gears and a thin layer of
lubricate on the back side of the display....I am not sure
what brand. My Screen would get stuck half way out and then
I had to push it back in. I thought the Motor was going out,
but then I apllied that grease and now it works fine.... That was about a year ago.

    • Take it apart and look to see if thereare anyway that you may have shorted out something on the board. Some boards do have a small glass fuse.

    • This is going to require that you disassemble that entire stereo.

    • If you have a Voltage tester you can test the different points on the board ( buttons etc) to see if there is a full circuit being made.

    • When taking it apart take a Digital Photo of the device and take several photos of it "close ups" so that if you need to you can see where all the parts go back.

    • When you changed the ribbon you did not have to take apart the entire stereo, so I think if you could fully disassemble it, you may find the source of the problem a lot quicker and you may notice that you have a burnt resisters or a cap....

    • So I have given you all that I know of that will help trace the problem.
    ___________________________________________________________________________________
Always remember to look at the simple things 1st ! 2nd back track your steps when you
1st removed the stereo and the and took it apart.

    • Double check to make sure that they manufacture did not accidentally send you the wrong Ribbon

    • Pioneer has several DVD players and they are some what similar so

    • They could of easily put the wrong part in the package..

    • There may be a small part number on the ribbon

    • If you do see a part # call the place that you ordered it from to make sure U have the correct one

    • If you did not order it from Pioneer than you should REALLY make sure!!!!

    Thank You
    Jayson

Take a closer look at the ribbon connector. it sounds like a problem with connection that is why it is not responding. it could probably have thin film of protective cover on the contacts that you need to remove before installing it.

what about configuration?..is line number 1 connected to line number 1 on the other end?..it could have been connected on the reverse?

    tnx again,

    drcool

  • francis rivero Sep 20, 2008

ok, if we disregard the ribbon as the culprit, it could be the buttons. specially the volume down button or the mute button, if one of the buttons is stuck then it would not respond to the others. look at all the buttons and try to play with it. you might be able to unstuck one.

    tnx again,

    drcool

  • francis rivero Sep 20, 2008

the screen really depends on the ribbon. without the ribbon or if the ribbon is not making a good/right connection, the screen would not work.

    tnx again, drcool

sorry, we are half way around the globe to provide you with that information. just try the local electronics shop in your area or yet, try the service center for that particular DVD player.

  • francis rivero Sep 20, 2008

i have not encountered any problem like what you have yet.

    drcool

  • francis rivero Sep 20, 2008

it could have been damaged when the ribbon was damaged. thin wires from the ribbon could have been shorted out and damaged the unit. so replacing the ribbon would have not solved the problem. specially if a metal thing cuts the wires of the ribbon. it would short the wires as it cuts it.

    tnx again,

    drcool

If you have a blank screen while listening to an audio source (Radio, CD, USB, etc.) the interconnecting ribbon cable that goes from the system board to the display module could be damaged/cracked and needs to be replaced.
