Canon Powershot S1 IS

Hi.

When trying to take photographs the screen is black and no picture can be taken. All other functions seem to work. I have tried the Tv solution recommended for the S2, but this does not work. Any other suggestions, please.

I have the same problem where the screen and view finder images are black - although the information about the photo to be taken is still visible (eg. focal length etc.)

This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free worldwide, and may also include free shipping both ways (free shipping varies with countries). This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check this link for more info.

Canot see subject trying to photograph

Hello, You should contact Canon about the situation. Let them know you are aware of the problem CCD sensor on the S1 camera. Actually S1 is repaired free of charge because of the CCD problem. You should suggest that your camera probably has the same defect as the S1. See what they say. If you need more info please advice. Arpi

When I turn the camera on (Canon Powershot A 80) purple and black stripes trouble the screen. The camera takes pictures anyway, but it is hard to see what photograph you make. Can anyone help?

Hi,
This is known problem of ccd imager chip failure in Canon A80 camera and ccd imager chip will be replaced to fix picture problem.
Canon offers free of cost ccd imager replacement, click Canon CCD Imager Advisory for details.
Thanks.

looks like a lot of us have this same problem, Danielle. Consensus is it's a problem with the CCD chip. I'm contacting Canon about ours. Hopefully they'll fix for free as one guest posted. Let's be optimistic!!

Blank black screen for my canon powershot S1 IS digital camera

This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen. Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.

PROBLEM WITH POWERSHOT S1 IS

But have you actually taken picture? Take a bunch and upload them to computer to see whats is there. The black screen . Can you see a shadow image on the screen if you look along it instead of at it. If you can then this would indicate the backlight has failed. If nothing is to be seen then it is more serious. In case it may be a simple connector coming loose try gently squeezing the casing in the region of the base of the screen. Do get onto the Canon technical help team on the website. if it is a youngish camera, there may be a replacement offer. But repair I do not think is an option.
