Tell your PC to scan for hardware changes, and see if it will "discover" your sound device.
If it does, great, if it doesn't, reinstall the sound drivers.

If none of that works, do a system restore to just before the update you installed.
And remember not to install that update again.
You may also want to check the MS Knowledge Base to see if they have any special notes on the last update you installed. Just do a search on the update that was installed (you'll find it in the add / remove programs list).

Cannot get any sound out of system in device manger it tells me the audio device is working properly. help appreciated. computer is hp pavilion a730n Lyle

Lyle,
You need to download the audio driver, and install it.
Just had to do this with my Gateway after a Restoration.

This is HP Support, and the main support page for the Pavilion a730n desktop computer,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=431078&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=1&lang=en&cc=us

On this page left-click on the heading -
Software and Driver Downloads. (Ampersand for and)

On this page choose your Operating System.
I chose Windows XP for an example.

(Left-click on the blue down arrow to the left of the box, that has Select in it. Then left-click on the Operating System your computer is using. Now left-click on Next)

Left-click on the + sign to the left of -
Driver - Audio (1)
Now left-click right on the file name -
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Update

Left-click on Download.
(In blue rectangular box with two right arrows)

Instructions from HP Support for downloading, and installing:

Installation Instructions1. Download the driver update.
2. Double-click the icon for the update file downloaded in Step 1, and then click NEXT.
3. Accept the terms in the HP license agreement, and then click NEXT.
4. Click YES and wait for the update to complete.
5. Click YES to restart your PC.

Once you have restarted your computer, and Windows has full loaded, you should get a pop-up out of your system tray.
Your audio (Sound) should be back now.

If this doesn't work the only alternate suggestion I may offer, is to but an inexpensive sound card, and install it.

(Computer unplugged from power, follow Anti-Static Precautions.
Don't forget to install the CD disk from the sound card FIRST, then install the sound card)

If you have additional questions regarding this, please post in a Comment.

Regards,
joecoolvette.

(Would like to hear from you so that I know you read my solution, thanks)

My HP a800n (using XP) worked fine yesterday. Last night, an automatic update came in from Microsoft. Today, I cannot get it to consistently boot up. It did it once earlier and locked up. Now, I get the...

Try to boot up into safe mode and see if you can get in there. If so then go into the system tools folder in the start menu or by going into the windows icon. You would go into accessories and then system tools and then go into system restore.

In the system restore choose the last good known date that is bolded when the computer was working properly. After you click on the date to choose it go ahead and let it restore. It will need to reboot, once it does if it goes back in then your good. At that point I would suggest turning off automatic updates for windows.

If you can't get into safe mode, then your going to need to reinstall windows cause the operating system is corrupted.

You're looking to download the first driver on the list, the, "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Update." Once you download it simply opening the downloaded file should install the driver for your sound chipset. If not, read the instructions on the download page for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to properly unpackage and install the drivers.

If installing these driver's doesn't do the trick, let me know. I'll try to help you debug the problem and get the whole issue resolved.

Let me know how it turns out or if I can assist you further.

After using recovery disc for windows xp there is no sound

You need to update the sound drivers, Find out what sound card you are using and search the web for the drivers by either typing your motherboard model or your computer model. Use search functions to help you find what you are looking for. I hope this helps. You might want to provide more info on the devices attached to your motherboard. Use device manager for more info.

No sound card

Right click 'My Computer' choose Properties, Click on the hardware tab, then click Device Manager. Find your device, possibly under Multimedia Controller or Unknown device. Once you found the device that is your soundcard, right click it and choose Update Driver. Choose Advanced install and "Specify driver location" Then browse to the directory you extracted the contents of the file you downloaded from HP. Follow the prompts and if it is the correct driver you will have sound.
