I have a Sony Handycam Mini DV,(HC39E), and am having difficulty playing my old tapes, which are between 2+5 years old. The problem is that the picture skips and the audio breaks up. It is intermittent and sometimes areas that jogged previously run fine and vice versa. I recorded a wedding just recently using a new tape and there are no problems at all with playback. I've tried a head cleaner but that didn't work. Tha camera is 5 years old but has only been used to make a dozen films or so.
What can be the problem? Is there a problem with the old tapes and can that can be resolved? Or is the fault with the Handycam?
Andy
Thanks but that is prohibitively expensive. I'll need to find another solution. Thanks but that is prohibitively expensive. I'll need to find another solution.

There are two solutions, one, buy a mini dv tape player. They are kind of expensive, but you will be able to get your information off your tapes. Second, buy a used, working mini dv camcorder on ebay and use it to get your information off your tapes. A five year old camcorder is not work fixing.
I have a sony handycam DCR-HC26. After loading in the DV cassette tape and the tape cannot get loaded in and therefore I can't close the tape door. Please help.
Thanks
Yes, need to clean video head of camcorder. Put MiniDV head cleaning tape in camera and clean its video head as per instructions on cleaning tape. Thanks.
