Question about IBM NetVista PC Desktop

IBM thin desktop unit locks up ramdomly

I was brought and old IBM desktop computer (slim tower) with win 2000 pro on it. the computer locks up ramdomly: it just freezes up completely (mouse does not move, clock is still, computer stays on).
what I have tried:
1. it's not a software problem: I have reinstalled win200 pro and xp on it and still freezes up
2. there are no particular errors reported in event viewer.
3. I tested the 128mb memory stick using MS memory checker dos style app with no errors reported
4. same lockup occurs in safe mode.
5. no problems during installation.
6. the only thing i was able to notice is that after installation I attempted to install avast and the computer locked up as I started run the setup file at least 3 times.
7. same as 6 when I was accessing control pannel a couple of times.
9. even leaving computer untouched the lock up happens minutes or hours after the computer has been on.

any suggestions?

you said it!.. I've been reading about freezing problems and computer lock ups.. I've recently inclined to believe it's an overheating cpu!. I'm going to do some testing and see what happens while I track the cpu temputure..

thanks again for your suggestion and for sharing your experience with me!

This sounds like the memory controller on the motherboard has gone out.
replacing the motherboard would solve the problem.

the problem you are describing, in my experience, is a defective memory controller.
if the motherboard you are seeking is obsolete, that is unfortunate yet common.

sadly, a hardware problem of this nature often leads to disappointment
and a new purchase that exceeds consumer needs.

You have a compatibility issue as per your comments and you have no choice but to use the components and operating system that will work with each other. Without drivers you are in deep doo doo and there is no forcing the issue.

There could be a hardware problem on the computer if the power button led light is "Orange/ or amber", if you can open the computer, try removing one memory card at a time and see if the power button will change.

Hi I have got a dell optiplex gx270 with the licence of win xp pro, I am trying to restore the system with ctrl F11 but nothing work, when I select boot from cd the system lunch win xp pro with login and...

if you want to restore the computer to the factory settings.
restart the comptuer. immediately hold down the CONTROL key and start tapping F11 key.
Note : all of the data and software would be lost. Your computer will be restored to factory settings like a newly brought system.
IF this does work then go to bios, and make cd rom as the first boot devices, hit f10. now, hit "escape" once and select, "save" and hit enter.
Now, comptuer will be restarted. Now,start tapping space bar, It will boot from the disk.
else restart the computer and again start tapping spacebar at the startup.

Intellistation e pro acts as if booting, but doesn't

Its nothing but the port of your display cable in computer tower and the display card. If its inbuilt (on board) display card then the slot where the extention is linked. If you can then just open the tower and change the slot of the display card. 100% gurantee it would work.

Computer is on, moniter is on, but there is no picture.

Remove any USB devices such as mp3 players. If your computer is supplied with a wireless mouse & keyboard then leave the receiver in.

If it still doesnt work try it without the reciever. Or return it to the store where you brought it from
