Go into the settings menu and set it to "Balanced". The thing you have to remember is that they say "Up To 5 hours" not will run for at least 5 hours. It probably will last for 5 hours on idle but not if you are watching movies on it. They take a lot of processor time, therefore use a lot of power.
Open the Control Panel, Power Options, set to High Performance, open Change Plan settings, set Plugged in Never in both, Change Advanced Power settings, scan each, set Hibernate to never, adjust to your preference. Always shut down and unplug your laptop when not in use, it will last longer and a reboot everyday will reset the machine. If you use plugged into AC a lot remove battery.

Another option is through the Internet. Launch the utility:
Start > Programs > Asus > ASUSUpdate
Follow the directions.
There is also ASUS EZ Flash.
Make sure that you do have a copy of your current or original BIOS, if
you have the CD that came with the MoBo then you are golden.
When you were uninstalling the extra software components you might've uninstalled a keyboard driver that allowed the laptop to recognize those keys. To re-download your drivers and utilities do the following:
Under Utilities find the driver uninstalled and download it (this might take some trial and error, i'd suggest trying "ASUS FancyStart" utility or "LifeFrame 3 Utility" under the "Utilities" category).
Boot to safe mode and see if the problem is the same. Have you checked for viruses and spyware? Look in Control Panel/Admin Tools/Event Viewer, System and Application for red marks. Do you have a temp monitor installed? Have you changed anything in the BIOS? Set to safe defaults.
