Hi Brit

HP PHOTOSMART A646 PRINT CARRIAGE JAM

It would seem that there is some papar or some other foreign object obstructing the the passage of the print head carriage in you printer.

Look carefully at the paper input and output trays to see if any paper of foreign object is jammed.

Then look carefully at the ink cartridge compartment to see if the cartridges are properly clicked into place and that all the sealing tapes and plastic clips have been removed from the cartridges. Check that nothing is blocking the free movement of the print head. When closing the door the to the ink cartridge compartment, make sure that the door is closed properly.

Then power off your printer, power it up again and test it again. If the error message appears again, press OK on the printer's control panel and test again.

A PDF copy of the printer manual is downloadable from here in case you do not have access to the printer's original manual:

Good luck.

I hope this helps.

Check the LCD on your printer control panel or the status monitor on your computer for an error message. If there is an error message, follow the instructions to clear it.

If there is no error message, or if the problem continues:

  1. Open the access door.
  2. Disconnect the power adapter from the back of the printer.
  3. CAUTION: Do not use force on the printhead carriage to move it. Gently move the printhead carriage from side to side to see that it moves freely and there are no obstructions.
  4. Remove any obstructions that may prevent the printhead carriage and ink cartridges from moving to the center position.
  5. Close the access door.
  6. Connect the power adapter to the printer.
  7. Remove the ink cartridges from the printhead.
  8. Verify that the labels on the ink cartridges are intact, and that the cartridges are not damaged.

I just changed the (2) ink cartridges in my HP PCS 1610 All-in-One HP printer and now get an error message "CARRIAGE JAM - OPEN DOOR. CLEAR CARRIAGE JAM, AND THEN PRESS OK." I don't see any jam...

Have you tried moving the carriage to see if it really is jammed? Maybe you haven't put the levers down properly on your new cartridges....remove them, see if the carriage slides, then refit them and check the carriage again. You wont visually 'see' a carriage jam,; you have to try moving it. By the way, if it doesn't move, DONT force it to try and overcome the jam try and reason out why it doesn't move.
Hope this helps!

Put new ink in printer. got the message "carriage jam" checked ink to see if correctly installed...it was. tried to use it again and same message appeared. Did as was instructed on Kodak...

Open the print carriage access door. Check for any packing material that may be blocking the internal components. Check for an orange shipping lock that may still be in place on the left side. Pull the shipping lock out, if present, and discard.

Remove and reinstall the cartridges to make sure they are properly installed. Lift the front center of the print carriage access door to open it. Lift the door up until it locks into an open position. Press down on a print cartridge and allow it to spring back up. Lift the cartridge out of the printer. Do the same for the other cartridge. Slide the black cartridge into the slot on the left and the color cartridge into the slot on the right. Press down on each one to lock it into place. Lower the print carriage access door.

Check the print cartridges to make sure the protective tape has been removed from the ink nozzles. Remove the cartridges from the printer. Remove any tape or labels. Replace the cartridges into the printer.

Push in on the tab on the left side of the clean-out door on the back of the printer to open the door. Lift the door out of the printer. Check for any paper jams. Jammed paper can block the printer cartridge carriage from moving. Pull any jammed paper out.
