"Please insert the last disk of the Multi-volume set and click Ok to continue"

means you have put something on the drive which is incomplete. When the drive is read by your computer, it delivers a checksum error because of a missing or incomplete file that is associated with something that you have put on the drive. You do not need to format the drive and you certainly would not want to do that if you have data on it because formatting will erase all your files!. Simply press ok several times and the insert last disk message will disappear. Then remove the files one by one by deleting them until the error no longer shows. You can then put each file back on the drive.

    Why does this happen?

Sometimes, if you have a power glitch when transferring files they can be corrupted especially if your computer is slow and you transfer a lot of files at the same time. It is best to transfer just a few files at a time.

Just remember that the error you are getting is nothing to do with your flash drive or the new data you are trying to paste or transfer. It is simply due to something that you tried to paste earlier. Never format any drive that has data on it unless you are happy to lose all the data and wipe the drive clean. Also, do not interrupt data as it is transferring to a flash drive. If you decide you want to cancel the transfer, wait until it has finished and then just delete it. Try not to stop it half way through.

People often feel panic when I see this. If I format the drive, will I lose all my data? If not, how could I get access to my files?

My take is that you may have to format the drive and then use recovery software to recover your files.

Here's some information about file recovery, think you need to take a look, very useful

Virus or trojans can run some process that keeps running in background. This not only harms the computer, but also prevents the pen drive from formatting as it shows that the drive is in use. Remove and re-insert thepen drive, don't double click on drive and cancel autorun operations if it starts automatically. Run a virus scan on pen drive, this will help fix the issue. Now format the pen drive.

If the pen drive is not detected at all, or shows a less capacity, then there are high chances that its a chipcorruption. Flash chips are the actual hardware components that save the data. A physical or electrical or electromagnetic damage to these chips make the pen drive faulty. This can happen because of voltage fluctuations and faulty USB ports. In such case, get the flash drive replaced if its under warranty as it can not be fixed otherwise.

Sounds a bit un-believable but true. There are a lot of pen drives in the market which are of very cheap quality which are fake copies of some known brands. Beware of such pen-drives. Always purchase pen-drives or memory-cards from a reliable source with bill and warranty to avoid any mess later.

Do not format the drive. Try some photo recovery software to rescue the files on your digital memory card, here are some for your options.

Photo Recovery (for Windows)
Photo Recovery for Mac

Be careful: Before your pictures are recovered, do not attempt to save more files to the card in case the original files(your pictures) are overwritten.

Files in my kingston pendrive does not open up

Hi manoj_clc,

The "other PC" needs to have the same application installed that created the files. It sounds likely that is the problem for the other PC. If the files are failing to open using the PC that originally copied the files, then try formatting the USB drive (formatting deletes all data). Before you copy the file again, make sure the same file opens from your computer prior to copying it. Now copy the file to it the USB drive again.
