Compaq s4300nx power supply and memory problem

I was brought a compaq that would not boot up with a long beep, one after the other. the computer is 7 years old.

I cleaned up the computer taking care of ESD and put everything back together.

the computer now won't turn on

I solved it by doing the following:

    1. I noticed the back of the power supply was flashing so I followed the troubleshoot suggestions from compaq when the back light of the power supply flashes..

    2. It came down to it was either the mobo, memory, or cpu.

    3. I switched the memory (2 sticks of 256mb ddr) in different combinations but nothing worked, after changing and testing one combination at a time.

4 I had ruled out the powersuppy as being the cause but I decided to still test the system with a spare powersupply and as I did a continue switching memory (one combination at a time)... the computer boot after using only one of the memory sticks...

    Solution:

Not only the powersupply was faulty (despite what the compaq website indicated.. but also one of the memory sticks.... I got a little help from a fellow technitian (who deserves the credit.. I got to say). and I saved myself from repurchasing another mobo and cpu as those were the ones I thought where the real problem was.

lesson learned: still swap for known good items while checking the obvious.

    thought I should share this!

It isn't a Processor problem

(Or is there a series of beeps, and the fan is running wide open?)

[ Just curious. Call it a poll, if you will.....
Did you follow Anti-Static Precautions, and did you Thoroughly clean the Processor, and bottom the Heatsink; plus correctly apply, fresh new Thermal Paste? Reply in a Comment ]

Where did you get the Start-Up repair from?

What does the router have to do with this?

Do you get any BIOS Beep Codes?

You have another 'Compaq processor'.
Do you have another KNOWN to be good, Compatible Power Supply also?

My desktop compaq presario s4300nx starts up , i can accses set up with f1 but cant start recovery with F10 however the F10 button works in setup, no good to me, ...i have recovery disks the pc just...

you will need a Windows boot disk / Windows install disk / WinXP disk to reboot the PC and install / or repair your OS

rescue disk will not boot your PC
to enable that you need to enter the BIOS, press F1, F2 or Del to enter BIOS , then you need to look for the BOOT seq in BIOS, change that to CD DVD drive as the 1st boot device, Save and Exit and insert the boot CD and restart
this should give you the solution

Computer will not start

It all depends how many beeps there were.
From http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12253_div/12253_div.HTML
Diagnostic LED Explanation Table Number of 1-second red LED blinks followed by 2-second pause, then repeats:
2-processor thermal protection activated
3-processor not installed
4-power supply failure
5-memory error
6-video error
7-PCA failure (ROM detected failure prior to video)
8-invalid ROM, bootblock recover mode

I have only really come across 4 beeps = order new Power Supply or 5 Beeps = reseat the memory and hope it works

COMPAQ PRESARIO SR1420NX, TRYS TO POWER UP BUT GREEN LIGHT ON FRONT POWER BUTTON JUST FLASHES..

Could be one of two things: either the power supply is going bad or the RAM is either going bad or isn't seated properly inside.

First thing I would try would be to re-seat all the memory chips inside the computer. There could be up to 4 sticks of memory in some computers. If this doesn't work, try pulling the memory out of the computer one stick and a time and booting the PC. If it boots, you've found your bad memory stick. Put all the others back in and replace the faulty one.

If none of this works, you might consider calling HP (maker for compaq) for support on getting the power supply replaced.

When i press the on switch the computer light turn red color and have a beep sound.

1 or 2 beeps is normal when turning on, for most mobo's. Check the motherboard owners manual for beep errors, for example 3 beeps might be a graphics card error, 4 keyboard error, or CPU or memory. it's in the manual for the specific motherboard. You can get it from the manufacturer's website. I can not supply a link to get you the online manual because you didn't specify what kind of motherboard you are using. Does it still boot? Do you see the BIOS on screen? Any error messages? When you press the power button your computer normally should beep once or twice and then performs a POST... Power-On-Self-Test. and this is when you get any error beeps. It could be something simple like forgot to hook up the monitor, to CPU or memory is loose, or memory is not compatible if you upgraded the memory.

Compaq Presaio S4200NX displays Compaq Splash Screen then a single continuous beep with but nothing else.

Hi,

Most Compaq desktop that exhibits 1 long never ending beep indicates Memory error; Bad RAM. Corrective measure therefore would be replace and test.

You can try removing the memory and cleaning the gold pins with a pencil eraser and try again. If this doesn't work, guess you're back to replacing.

Good luck and kind regards.
