Wireless Troubles with 2wire

I have an issue with my router. How many times have you heard that before? :)

This might get lengthy, I'm a detailed writer.

I have 2wire 2700HG-B DSL Router/Modem. In the past I had 2 PC's (mine and a roomates) and my Xbox360 connected with no issues. The router is in my roomates bedroom with his PC connected by ethernet and the phone-line for the router. My PC and Xbox were connected wirelessly in another bedroom.

I brought my xbox home from a friends house last night. I had just been able to connect to his wireless network just fine, and like I said I never had any issues connecting to my network in the past. But last night my xbox could not acquire an IP address. I did the t/s steps listed, making sure one ip wasn't being used twice. I wasn't sure how to check if my DHCP was assigned properly so I assumed it was ok, without having any issues with people connecting wirelessly with their laptops here recently.

Keep in mind, both PCs were connected just fine. Wireless and ethernet. I went into my modem settings (http://192.168.1.254) and went into wireless settings. I figured I would restore to defaults and if nothing changed, change the settings back. After restoring the wireless settings to defaults my wireless PC lost connection. I couldn't access the router page anymore. This made sense if my wireless was looking for the previous router wireless settings.

At this time I didn't have my roomates password to login and see if his ethernet connection was still up. So I took the router in my room and connected it with an ethernet so I could change the wireless settings back. I did not have a phone-line in my room so all I was focused on was getting the wireless settings back to what they were. I called SBC tech support and changed the settings back to what they told me to.

At this time my roomate came home so I was able to take the router back to his room and hook everything up and checked his ethernet connection. Its working fine. However, even after changing my wireless settings to what SBC told me to my PC still will not connect wirelessly.

My PC sees the network, has full wireless strength but just like the xbox while attempting to connect it pauses at "Acquiring Network Address" and then fails. I've reinstalled my wireless card drivers. I did a system restore back to Thursday when everything was working properly, I've reset and rebooted my router multiple times. Still no luck.

I'm about to go by 100ft ethernet cables for a temp fix. Any ideas on what I can try next before calling in a pro?

Router keeps losing connection

Dear bkbavis03,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

I had this same issue with 2Wire equipment when I connected Mac equipment to my network and then tried to connect a PC at the same time. For some reason, the firmware software within 2Wire products does not like to dual support Mac and PC at the same time.
Switch to a wonderful Cisco wireless router you can purchase at any local WalMart to resolve your issue.

Have a great day!

I have a wireless router but cant seem to take my laptop in to another room for use. screen comes up that says no connection, should'nt i be able to use it wireless within the 100 feet range?

In my experience being within 50 ft of various routers I have had seems to be the best singal strength. Any further then that I start having connection issues. So based on my experiences I would say the answer is No to your question. That is based on 'G' system routers. I have heard the 'N' routers have greater range and speed.

make sure you have the correct settings such as the type of security wep,wpa,wpa-psk,etc...make sure your security key is correctly entered, If your not sure open up a web browser and put http://gateway.2wire.net in the address bar go to your wireless security part of the modem and check your settings best thing to do is to hardwire to the pc and then go to that link. what kind of operating system do you have ?
