Wireless Internet router (home) Security

Unsecured means that you have not set any passwords or keys to lock your wireless connection. This is not a good practice. And yes, if the connection is unsecured, then others will be able to use it without any problems.

Do this if you are comfortable:

1) Go to Internet Explorer
2) Type http://192.168.1.1 (If that does not work, then try http://192.168.1.254)
3) Type the Username and password (both "admin")
4) Look for a Wireless tab
5) Look for Security and then look for WEP encryption.
6) Enable 64-Bit WEP encryption and type a key there. Save the settings.
7) Now when you try to connect to your connection, it will ask you for a key, put the same key as you had put in the router.

Please keep in mind to wire your laptop before doing these steps. Otherwise, you may be disconnected.

I have just got a Belkin N1 vision wireless modem router. I have set it up and have it working ok on a Unsecure wireless network. But as soon as I try to secure the network. I get the following message...

Hi,

Right-click on the network icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen, Press Connect to a Network. You should see your wireless network in the list. Before you secured it, you could automatically connect to it because it was unsecured. Now you will have to double click on it and enter the username and password you secured your router with.
Once you have done that, there should be a box for you to tick that says 'Automatically connect to this network'. Tick that.
Done.

Hope this helps

On setup option, Change the password.

you can see the IPaddress of the router at the bottom of the router or in documentation notes.

My neighbour has changed my password on my router

Most routers have a hardware reset switch somewhere on the device. You should be able to find this by looking at your user manual, or going online to lookup the location from the manufacturers website.
Once you reset the device to the factory settings you should be able to use the default password to log in and set a more secure password and secure your wireless if you haven't already done so.

I want to set up a password to secure our wireless connection. How do I do that?

Regardless of the brand/model, you need to look under "Wireless Security" (or some variant thereof) in your router's interface. There are different types of security, including WPA, standard WEP encryption, 64bit, 128bit or basic MAC filtering.

I prefer MAC filtering, personally, just because I enjoy knowing that the neighbors TRY to get on my wireless (as it will show 'unsecured'), but they can't.

Joed911 is right, though ...without make and model,, you need to go to the mfr's website and get the specifics there ...or, provide the info here and we can help you :)

Changed internet providers and can't remember password I would like to reset the system because I have a unsecured network and a secured one. I would like to only have a secured one.

Call the internet provider tech support phone number and get assistance in step by step configuring your network.

You will have to open Internet Explore , type in your router IP number (something like 192.168.0.1) and set up the network again.

A phone operator will follow you in doing this.

If you want to do it yourself you find instructions on haw to access router on Internet Explorer, and how to configure your network on router user manual.

I have a Belkin router that has NOT yet been secured. Last night the security lock light came on and now I can not use my wireless with my laptop, because I do not know how to get by the security code. It...

Odds are someone saw the network, saw it was unsecured, and changed admin and password on you. What you'll need to do is reset the router. On the back, should be a button you press with a pen tip. Press that and hold it for approx. 15 seconds. Power-cycle the router, and you should be able to access it again.

I need to set up a security password for my router at the moment i have a unsecured network?

Open an internet window type in your router's ip address and hit go, this will take you into your router's configuration. In there you should see a wireless section in which will be security, you can secure your network there (use WPA or WPA2 it's the most secure). When you have set this you will need to enter your password to all the wireless devices connected to your network.
If you google your routers make and setting up security, you should find a step by step guide.
Hope this helps

I'm not secure!! My wi-fi is unsecured. How do I secure it? I have a Belkin 54G. Thank you.

You need to set up security in the router's admin page:
http://192.168.2.1
I believe the default password is left blank.
You can get product support here:
http://www.belkin.com/support/browse/?lid=en
but you need your full model number (F5Dxxxx-x or something like that).
