Sharp minidisc player MD-MT161E(S). On putting in disc, the player attempts to read it and then come up with error message TOC3 and switches off. Is this economically fixable or is it a fatal problem?

Yes. Though not the news I wanted to hear. Thank you anyway.

I now believe that 'TOC' stands for 'Table of Contents'. The error message was wrongly reported by me and should have been 'TOC error a'. Surely, therefore, as the error occurs as the machine is trying to read the contents of a minidisc there is the possibility of the disc conternts being incompatible leading to the erroe message. The subsequent shutdown is, I believe, a normal function of the player.

This message indicates that there is a software problem in your sharp minidisc player .

The error TOC3 indicates that there is voltage regulation from high voltage to low voltage this causes you to switch off .

It is source code problem you can't repair you need to take to service center .

The cost will be around $100-200 if it is out of warranty .

Thanks for using Fixya

one other thing.... when you put the lid down for the disk.... hold it gently closed and see if you still get that error

and do you get this error with other disks.... sounds like a table of contents error re: reading the disk

From reading the manual further.... that disk is probably defective.

Thats a Sony medium. You're going to need a mini disk player. I would suggest checking ebay. There are a few different models available.

When I slot a mini-disk into my Sharp mini-disk player, it always comes up with a Toc error and switch itself off.

Try another mini-disc, if the disc is working fine, then there is a problem in the reader. You might have to replace it.

This is a typical problem when the laser " eye" gets dust on it, unplug the unit and you can try to remove cover and spray the optical pickup "eye' with canned compressed air or other type of optical cleaner found at say like radio shacks, I have solved many disc reading errors with this method

Mini disc player will not read disc

Minidisc player is just a small version of a CD player and has the same types of issues. Either the lens is diry or the optics are failing. Try cleaning the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that fails to resolve the problem, the optics assembly will need to be replaced.
