    When i try to shut down my computer a blue screen appears with an error report : stop:c000021a {fatal system error}

    Hi there,

    This is the cause:
The STOP 0xC000021A error occurs when either Winlogon.exe or Csrss.exe fails. When the Windows NT kernel detects that either of these processes has stopped, it stops the system and raises the STOP 0xC000021A error. This error may have several causes. Among them are the following:
    • Mismatched system files have been installed.
    • A Service Pack installation has failed.
    • A backup program that is used to restore a hard disk did not correctly restore files that may have been in use.
    • An incompatible third-party program has been installed.
If possible contact a local technician to the do the below,if you are not sure of this process.
and also ask him to take a backup of your registry keys and create a system restore point without fail.

To troubleshoot this problem, you must determine which of these processes failed and why.

To determine which process failed, register Dr. Watson as the default system debugger (if it is not already the default debugger). Dr. Watson for Windows NT logs diagnostic information about process failures to a log file (Drwtsn32.log). Also, you can configure this program to produce memory dump files of failed processes that you can analyze in a debugger to determine why a process fails.

To set up Dr. Watson to trap user-mode program errors, follow these steps:
    1. At a command prompt, type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe -I, and then press ENTER.

This command configures Dr. Watson as the default system debugger.
    2. At a command prompt, type System Root\System32\Drwtsn32.exe, and then select the following options: Append to existing log file
      Create crash dump
      Visual Notification
    3. After the computer restarts from the STOP 0xC000021A error, run Dr. Watson (Drwtsn32.exe).
    4. View the Dr. Watson log to determine what user mode process may be causing the problem.
    5. If the Dr. Watson log does not contain sufficient information to determine the cause of the problem, analyze the User.dmp file to determine the cause of the STOP 0xC000021A error.

If Dr. Watson did not create a User.dmp file for either Winlogon.exe or Csrss.exe, you may have to use a different tool to generate a memory dump file of the process that fails. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 241215 ( ) How to use the Userdump.exe tool to create a dump file Note Follow the instructions in the Knowledge Base article to troubleshoot a process that shuts down with an exception. While you follow these instructions, monitor the following processes to troubleshoot the STOP 0xC000021A error:
      • Winlogon.exe
      • Csrss.exe
Note Most STOP 0xC000021A errors occur because Winlogon.exe fails. This typically occurs because of a faulty third-party Graphical Identification and Authentication (GINA) DLL. The GINA is a replaceable DLL component that Winlogon.exe loads. The GINA implements the authentication policy of the interactive logon model. The GINA performs all identification and authentication user interactions.
It is very common for certain types of remote control software to replace the default Windows GINA DLL (Msgina.dll). Therefore, a good first step is to examine the system to see if it has a third-party GINA DLL. To do this, locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    Value = GinaDLL REG_SZ
    • If the Gina DLL value is present and if it is anything other than Msgina.dll, it probably means that a third-party product has changed this value.
    • If this value is not present, the system uses Msgina.dll as the default GINA DLL.
If this error first occurred after the installation of a new or updated device driver, system service, or third-party program, the new software should be removed or disabled. Contact the manufacturer of the software to see if an update is available. For more information about hardware and software vendor contact information, visit the following Microsoft Web site: - ( Last known good configuration If the previous steps in this article do not resolve the problem, start the computer by using the last known good configuration. To start the computer by using the last known good configuration, follow these steps:Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
    1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
    2. Click Restart, and then click OK.
    3. Press F8 at the indicated time:
      • For an x86-based computer: When a screen of text appears and then disappears , press F8. (The screen of text may include a memory test, lines about the BIOS, and other lines.) There may also be a prompt that tells you when to press F8.
      • For an Itanium architecture-based computer: After you make your selection from the boot menu, press F8. There may be a prompt that tells you when to press F8.
    4. Use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.
    5. Use the arrow keys to highlight an operating system, and then press ENTER.

After shutdown my computer i see blue screen saying: stop c000021a fatal system error, please solved this problem.

Perform the following steps to configure Dr. Watson as the default debugger program to record user-mode program errors:
    1. Open Start menu, select Run, type Drwtsn32.exe -I and then press Enter. This command sets Dr. Watson as the default debugger.
    2. Next, run the Drwtsn32.exe command.
    3. In the Dr. Watson for Windows dialog box, select the following check boxes:
      • Append to Existing Log File
      • Visual Notification
      • Create Crash Dump File
    4. Now, when your computer restarts after the STOP 0xC000021A error is generated, run the Dr. Watson command.
    5. Here, view the paths to the Dr. Watson and User.dmp logs.
    6. Open Windows Explorer, navigate to the log files and then open them.
    7. Here, check the cause behind the STOP 0xC000021A error.
Most of the time, this error occurs due to the failure of the Winlogon.exe process. This usually happens if a faulty third-party Graphical Identification and Authentication (GINA) DLL exists on your system. GINA is a replaceable DLL component that is used to perform the following tasks:
    • Implement the authentication policy of the interactive logon model.
    • Perform user interactions, such as authentication and identification.
At times, a remote control software may replace the default GINA DLL file, msgina.dll, on your computer and you may face the stop error. This is the reason why it is a good idea to first check if you have a third-party msgina.dll on your computer. To do this, run the regedit command to open the Registry Editor tool. Here, navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Here, check if the value GinaDLL REG_SZ is on the right pane. If the value is there and its value is different from msgina.dll then it means that a third-party software has changed this value. In case this value is not there, it implies that that your system uses msgina.dll as the default DLL file for GINA.
If this error follows a new driver, service or third-party software installation, you must try to uninstall this new software to repair the error. To do this, you may use a good third-party program uninstaller tool, such as Perfect Uninstaller to ensure complete removal. You may also try to install an update for the software, if it is available.
You may also try to boot your computer with Last known good configuration information to see if the error goes. If nothing works, you may have to perform and in-place upgrade of your operating system to resolve the error.
    utmx_section("bottomad") Additional Recommendations...
Driver Update: Many errors are related to driver problems such as obsolete, outdated or incompatible drivers. A driver update tool is recommended to scan your system for corrupted and outdated drivers and to ensure that all your drivers stay up-to-date.

    hope this helps

Jit debugging problem. I have tried disabling the script debugging on internet and other. This didn't solve the problem. Any other suggestions ?

I was just reading the thread! Kinda hilarious though.
JIT is used to catch real time errors especially run-time. It is very useful for developers. To catch un handled exceptions.
Jit comes as a part of Visual Studio. If you do not know how to manage Jit its better not to install Visual Studio (no skills to manage it will give you lots of trouble). Just the programing skills does not make a good developer. Well its not a fault of VS developer team or Bill Gates. Doh!
Jit will be invoked if enabled by Visual studio, instead of Dr Watson. If programs crash the crash handlers will be invoked and you will see Dr.Watson process running in the background. It will call dumprep and will create error logs; Errors will be logged in Event Viewers as well. Even a simple failure will be handled and Jit will be invoked. So programs will begin to crash while they run or install.
Some developers set programs to use Jit and Jit will be enabled instead of Dr.Watson. Dr.Watson will be invoked in serious errors however. Its obvious. But specially if you have installed Visual Studio, you will be using JIT as well. JiT overrides the Dr.Watson Program. But you can reverse it back using two methods.
Its a third party piece however. I wonder why these MSDN people do not know how to provide a complete answer. Each and every person does not understand Administration of programs. So its their responsibility. That is a laughing matter though. But people will be pissed off. Can't blame them either. Some of them are not familiar with regedit tools. So the answers have to be flexible and complete.
The bad behavior of JIT is it will suspend the program an once when an error occur. You will never be allowed to run further. So its kinda piece of ****. It also has security issues with it.
Unfortunately if a program Invokes JIT intensionally its not possible to reverse the process.
Stop JIT while you have Visual Studio installed (Its a stupid thing to uninstall it without removing JIT. No way!)
How this thing will be enabled?

    1. Open VS:
    2. Go to Tools and then Options.
    3. In the Options Dialog box Double click Debugging and then click JIT
    4. Enabling options:
    • Manage
    • Native
    • Script
    Click on OK.
This sets the Registry key and will start JIT. So do the Revers to Disable it.
You have to Disable the Keys. Method one:
    1. Click on Start Menu and Type Run (for P Hit Run box)
    2. Type in regedit and hit Enter
    3. Expand the Keys to located the place
    4. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AeDebug\Debugger is one location.
    5. HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\DbgManagedDebugger
    6. Delete these keys. Or set the Auto key's value to 1.
    7. On a 64bit system the paths will be: HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\...
    8. You may need to reboot the system as well.
Method two: Enable Dr.Watson using an alternative method:
    • Get a Command Window (Command Prompt)
    • Type drwtsn -i and
    • Hit enter
If you were using a third party debugger read this Microsoft Support
    Next step

Open Start>Control Panels>Internet Options: Advanced and activate (check box)

    • Disable Script Debugging (Internet Explorer)
    • Disable Script Debuggung (Other)

If you have enabled Server Side Script Debugging the pages will freeze if an error occurs. Read the enabling procedure. Steps to enable debugging portion. Do the Reverse to disable it.
For Script Debuggers: Here is how you enable the JIT:
    • Click on Options then Tools
    • Click on Debugger
    • Select JIT debugger and attach to programs running on this machine
    • So now you know how it happened. Do the reverse to disable it!

Using third party tools and software may enable this tool. If you detect one you have to avoid using it. Just posted this in the MSDN thread as well.
Please rate the answer as well! Feel free to contact if you have further issues.
    Thanks for using Fixya! -Lasitha
