i found a 2 jaw gear puller with wide pullers (more grip surface area) and a 5 ton torque pull. it took all of about 1/4 of a second to remove the steering wheel.

now i cant seem to figure out how to remove the actuator, as this is causing the key to be stuck and not being able to turn the cylinder to the off position to remove the key. the upper has a single tooth that is broken in half, the lower will not move beyond the on position (can not move to the off or accessory position). the switch is not attached to the lower, and the keyed cylinder housing is free of its internals. do you have any insight on this, or know anyone who might?

Steve is giving a good "last resort" suggestion. FYI, the center nut must be on "loosely" [about 5 thread] while performing his procedure. The proper way to remove the steering wheel is to remove the center nut, then using a 2 armed gear puller, insert the arms into the 2 vertical, rectangular slots on either side of the center nut. If this is how you are doing it, your problem is probably with a poor quality or worn out rental tool.

Hi if you steering wheel has just the one NUT in the middle on the threaded colum i found the best way to remove a stuck steering wheel is to ( this might sound a bit heavy handed but it does work) get a piece of hard wood, and a heavy hammer, get a friend to pull up on the wheel as you hit the center of the colum making sure the wood is firmly in the hole, keep the nut on as i have done this a few times without the nut ( silly misstake) and the wheel has hit me in the mouth lol..give it a try you will be supprised..good luck

I think you have the wrong puller. The screws are not the right size. There are usually several sets
of screws with the steering wheel puller. Are you sure you are using the correct screws?

There are usually 2 sets of screws with the puller that are the same size, but have different
number of threads per inch. So check to make sure you are using the right screws with the puller.

Where did you rent the puller?

same style as that one, but the jaws on the puller i rented are taking chunks out of the top portion

  • Anonymous Oct 02, 2011

Well, this may seem stupid to ask, but did you loosen the the screw holding the steering wheel on a bit so the wheel could have room to move.

You should loosen the screw but still not completely take it out so the wheel can move and you have something solid
for the puller to push against.

  • Anonymous Oct 02, 2011

Only after seeing the picture of the wheel I realized you are using a jaw type puller.

  • Rob Cabs
    Rob Cabs Oct 02, 2011

yes i loosened the screw and out about an 1/8 th of an inch. yes thats what it is a 2 jaw puller, but it keeps slipping off and bringing chunks of the steering wheel with it

  • Anonymous Oct 02, 2011

As a last resort I would remove the screw and spray a little bit
of wd-40 or pb penetrating lubricant on the splines. Then let is sit for an hour and try again.

  • Rob Cabs
    Rob Cabs Oct 03, 2011

thanks for the input, i let it sit with wd-40 but it still would not budge. i went out with the intention of buying a new steering wheel and then cutting this one off since the top is now chewed up.

Steering wheel removal 02 eldorado, how to

You will need a steering wheel puller. You can borrow one from most auto parts stores. You will need to remove the horn airbag center to expose the bolt. Loosen the main steering wheel bolt till it's almost off then attach the puller. Keep tightening the puller till the steering wheel comes free.

How do i take the the steering wheel off 99 silverado 2500

Be sure to deactivate the air bag before working on the steering wheel. I just disconnect both battery connections and let it set 15 minutes. Insert a flat tip screwdriver into each slot on the back of the steering wheel and twist slightly to release air bag retaining clips.Don't do this while sitting in the drivers seat, the bag might go off! Pull the bag off, release the small assurance clip then the connector will pull out of the air bag. Set it in the bed, bag side up so the cover can't become a projectile if it goes off. Pull the horn connector out of the steering wheel. Back the large bolt out most of the way on the steering wheel puller . Bolt the puller to the wheel with 2 bolts and screw the large bolt back into the puller. I tap on the wheel as I screw it in.

My ignition switch is jammed on my 1985 monte carlo any suggeestions

you will have to replace the lock cylinder in the steering column. This is a diy job, if you can borrow or rent 2 tools. One is a steering wheel puller, and the other is a lock plate depressor. Some part stores will loan/rent these tools. Once you have the tools proceed as follows: 1 remove steering wheel with steering wheel puller
2 install lock plate depressor and depress the lock plate to remove the retaining ring. 3 Remove the turn signal lever and hazard light button, then the three screws that hold the turn signal switch, pull up on the switch and push it out of the way. You may have to get under the dash and unplug the harness to the switch to get enough slack to clear the steering column. 4 remove the lock cylinder retaining bolt then slide the lock out. slide the new lock in replace the retaining bolt and reassemble the column.

How do i take off my steering wheel to fix my horn

You need to rent a steering wheel puller or just buy one. Part stores should have both situations available.Remove center cover and the plate will bolt in to the two screw holes in center. The large center bolt will screws inward and pushed the wheel off evenly. Don't forget to remove the center nut on the wheel before you begin.

Installation of horn contact and steering wheel on trans am. Car is a 1981

Pull the horn cap off, it should have plastic tabs that lock into a metal cylinder underneath, but will pop off pretty easily. That metal cylinder should be held on by 3 screws. Under those screws is a plastic washer and your contact ring. If you're replacing a steering wheel and need to pull the old one buy, rent or borrow a steering wheel puller. There's nothing worse than having to explain to your buddies how you broke your nose removing a steering wheel. They puller looks like a crows foot. It has three slots on one side and one on the back side. You can use three bolts to attach it to the steering wheel. I wrench will work to screw down the large bolt in the center and the steering wheel will come right off. Put a new steering wheel on, new contacts, and you should be set to go.

How to get the blinker switch assembly out of a 1966 oldsmobile 98?

1966 Olds 98?
It's been a while, so bear with me. The main objective is to remove the steering wheel, to have access to the turn signal switch.

1.Negative battery cable disconnected

2.I believe you twist the horn button in the middle of the steering wheel, and pull up, to remove. The horn button should have a ring of thick rubber on the bottom, which keeps it in the steering wheel. The chrome piece under the horn button may come off with it, or it stays on the steering wheel. This is the part that is fuzzy to remember.

3.Remove the steering wheel nut, and lock washer.

4.If you do not have a steering wheel puller, go to your nearest auto parts store, and see if one is available to rent. The cost of this puller is relatively low, so you may just want to go ahead, and purchase one. While you're there you need to obtain another tool also. Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool.

5.After the horn button is removed, and the steering wheel nut, you will see a flat metal area of the steering wheel. On each side of the threaded part of the steering column shaft, there are two small threaded holes, in this flat metal area.

The steering wheel puller, is a bar shaped piece of metal, that has a threaded hole in the middle. There is a threaded shaft that goes into this hole. On each end of the metal bar are slots. Threaded bolts go through these slots, and line up with the two threaded holes in the steering wheel. There is a pointed tip, that rotates on the threaded shaft, of the steering wheel puller. This pointed tip goes in the middle of the steering wheel shaft. (The shaft that you removed the nut from)

Find the two correct threaded bolts in the steering wheel puller kit, that matches the threads in the steering wheel holes. They HAVE to be the correct size, AND the correct thread. (Fine thread, or Coarse thread. They will be SAE thread, and not Metric) If the puller does not come with bolts, or the correct bolts, you'll have to purchase them separately.

Place the puller on top of the steering wheel shaft. Run the threaded shaft of the puller down, until at least 3 to 4 threads of the shaft, are showing on the steering wheel side. Now place a threaded bolt in the slot on the outside part of the bar.

Run the bolt down into the steering wheel threaded hole on one side. Make sure it goes in at least 1/2 inch. Do the same with the threaded bolt for the other side.
Adjust the length of the threaded shaft of the puller, so that the two outside bolts will go in as advised. Adjust the threaded shaft out, or in. Be SURE the two threaded bolts, are threaded down into the steering wheel the same depth, and the bolts are the same length!

Now turn the threaded shaft of the steering wheel puller in, with a ratchet and socket, to remove the steering wheel. (Turn the shaft to the Right)

6.Now remove the steering wheel lock ring. The steering wheel lock ring tool is now used.
There is a cylindrical shaped piece that has threads on the inside of it, and has a hole at the top, that a lock pin slides through, for the above tool. This cylindrical shaped piece is threaded down onto the steering wheel shaft.

The tool has a handle shaped like a screwdriver handle, and a shaft attached to the handle. The shaft goes down into the cylindrical shaped piece. Then the lock pin goes through the cylindrical shaped piece, and also a hole in the shaft of the tool. This lock pin locks the cylindrical shaped piece to the shaft of the tool.

BEFORE the cylindrical shaped piece is pinned to the shaft, you slide a U shaped piece up on the shaft. (Thought it would be better to explain it this way)
The opening of the U, goes down towards the steering wheel. It's U shaped to clear the steering wheel shaft.

As you turn the handle of the tool to the right, it pushes the U shaped piece down. The U shaped piece then depresses the steering wheel lock ring down.
(There is a Thick metal spring under the steering wheel lock ring)

You have to take a metal pick, and a small flat tip screwdriver, and remove the round snap ring. May take a little finesse, and a few tries. Use patience. Now back the steering wheel lock ring tool off. (Turn to the Left) The steering wheel lock ring will come up, so that you can take it off. Remove the spring. Remove the plastic horn contact assembly. Now you can see the screws to remove the turn signal switch.

NEED TO TAKE STEERING WHEEL OFF 1981 FORD BRONCO WITH COLUMN SHHIFT how?

I have worked on this same problem on a 1985 F100 and I'm sure the steering system is very similar. Take off all the pretty stuff on the outside of the steering wheel (horn buttons or horn ring) then you should be faced with a 11/16th to 3/4th nut. remove that nut and get a steering wheel puller (you can rent those at most auto parts houses for about $20.00. there is no replacement for having the right tool for the right job!) There will be holes that the steering wheel for the puller to be put in to. After you attach the puller to the wheel, take the middle bolt on the puller and tighten it until it makes contact with the bold on the steering column that you took the nut off of. You might have to hold the puller while you tighten the puller. After it makes contact, keep tightening until you feel the steering wheel POP off. Please resist the urge to try and use a hammer to take the steering wheel off and not use a steering wheel puller because it will never work (don't ask me how I know this!)

I hope this helps and much good luck!
