Question about Hampton Bay 36 In. San Marino in Brushed Nickel Fan

Hampton Bay San Marino 36" Ceiling Fan

I installed a Hampton Bay San Marino 36" Ceiling Fan. It works fine, except there is a very loud 60 cycle hum when the motor is operating. I used a 20 foot 18 gage extension wire to hook up to the 110 VAC source. What do I need to do to eliminate the hum? Thank you. Vern Chang

18 gauge is a little light... should use 14. Are you sure it is a hum, or is it possibly the fan resonating due to imbalance of the blades. Watch to see if the fan is oscillating when it runs. Also, does changing the speed affect the frequency of the hum. If this is the case, you have to balance the blades using metal shims.

The whinning in the motor is starting to go bad. You will have to replace either the motor or buy a new fan depending on the price you want to spend

Fan speed switch wiring

If your are replacing the fan speed switch on the Hampton Bay San Marino mfg # 67353, this is the correct wiring pattern...L-white, 1-yellow, 2- blue, 3-black. I have been searching for this answer for 2 days. Thought I'd post for others with the same problem.

Hampton Bay 36" Fan Hums but won't turn

The motor has gotten tired now after being on 24/7. With the blades off, it would turn easily but the weight of the blades strain the motor. You could check that there is proper 110 volt current to the motor because anything less will cause that problem too. You can also help the fan start by spinning the blades while it is on. Short of these suggestions, it is time for a new fan.

Removing fan from ceiling

If there is a bowl looking thing that is attached to the ceiling, that should be unscrewed (PLEASE NOTE WHEN DOING THIS TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE FAN VIA BREAKER!) It'll come down and you will see the wiring, un-do the wiring (it is color coded so you can put in a new one pretty easy). there will be a cup and a socket that is holding the fan in place, gently lift the fan up and out of the socket. there you go.
