Question about Nikon Cameras

1 Answer

Just got a new Nikon D80. I'm used to a Coolpix which has continuous images on the LCD. The D80 appears to present an image only when monitoring the picture and not while using the monitor to compose the shot. I assume this is because it is of the SLR breed. Am I correct?

Yes. Only the most recent DSLRs have a Live View capability. The D80 does not.

How can i used the LCD monitor during taking pictures? as of present i am only using the viewfinder? pls help me set my cam...

The D80 does not have the LiveView feature to allow using the LCD monitor for taking the picture. Nikon introduced this feature with the D3 and D300, which came out well after the D80. You have to use the viewfinder.

Sorry if this wasn't the answer you wanted to see, but that's just the way this camera works.

D80 Monitor does not function as view finder.

To be able to do what you want, your camera would have to have a feature called "live view"....yours does not.

I just got my new Nikon D80 but cannot get the LCD screen to light up. Where do I find the setting or the LCD screen to have it on while shooting pictures?

The D80 does not use the LCD screen to take images. The screen is only used to review images and use the menu system to check or change camera settings. When shooting, you need to use the viewfinder above the screen.

LCD on - view image prior to taking photo

The feature you are referring to is called "Live View mode".

This is NOT available on the Nikon D80, and was only introduced on the D90, which is available now.

Live View mode allows you to use the LCD screen as your view finder instead of using the eyepiece, but unfortunately, this feature is not available in your model.

Monitor does not show images in focus

Impossible. The D80 is an SLR which means there is a real shutter curtain blocking the imaging array, essentially 'blindfolding' the array. It cannot see the image until the shutter is opened. Nikon just introduced a new SLR that can do live view mode, if you want to spend a couple of grand.

LCD monitor doesn't work

I'm uncertain of your problem, but you are aware that the LCD screen on the D80 doesn't open physically as some do.   Also, you will not see any live images on the screen, only after you have taken a shot.

No image on the scree

If you can play back images and they can be seen on the LCD monitor, then the problem is the CCD sensor ( see image below to get an idea what I am talking about ).Nikon fixes this problem  free of charge so that is good news for you. But if there is no image in playback mode then it might be the LCD monitor.Unfortunately this will not be repaired free of charge if your camera is out of warranty.ba67e42.jpg
