Question about Amana Refrigerators

1 Answer

My Amana SSD22N fridge is not cold in the freezer--ice cream is cold, but very soft. The setting is up all the way. Ice making is slow/limited. I noticed the door gasket is very hot near the handles. Any suggestions?

Thanks, HUUUM. It's not really loaded too heavily, so I don't think the circulation is the problem. The fridge is probably 12-13 years old, I would guess (I don't see any sticker with a serial number, only the federal energy efficiency sticker with the model number). Here are some additional clues that might be helpful:

I noticed water was leaking from the door (coming from the in-door water service. I thought it was a broken tube, but it was really a sign that things were melting inside. When I unplugged the fridge, it seemed to reset things, and I noticed that food was harder/more frozen. That was a couple of weeks ago. Since then, it seems to be thawing again--feels cold, but just not cold enough. I know the compressor is working, since I have some cold.

On a another fridge I had one time, I think I had a similar problem. It was a bad thermostat on the refrigerant line. I had to take the freezer box panels off, thaw the ice on the coil, and replace the thermostat. It was kind of a pain, but I did it myself. I remember at that time I paid a phone-line service company a fee to diagnose the problem, and they sent me a part. May have to try that again.

    Thanks again.

Hello winkey,

Check if the freezer is packed to the hilt so as the packages cover the air vents in the rear of the freezer?
The freezer compartments share the cold air with the rest of the fridge and when blocked can upset the balance of cold air and the proper circulation.

How old is the refrigerator?
Let me know.

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

What setting do I use to make the freezer freeze food

When you are freezing something, set your freezer on its highest setting. However, if you are going to leave your freezer empty for a long time, you should change the setting to a lower one. Here's a great tip for ice cream: place a tub of ice cream in a ziplock bag before putting it in the freezer; it prevents freezer burn. You know when your ice cream gets so cold, it's hard to scoop out? Doing this stops that, it's keeps the ice cream just soft enough for easy scooping!

I have a kenmore upright freezer and can't remember which setting it should be on. It has coldest 1 2 3 etc.

I keep min two notches from the coldest setting.A great way to check where you should set yous,is ice cream.Put an open container of ice cream in the freezer, and turn the freezer to coldest. The next day try to scoop the ice cream. If the ice cream is hard the freezer is too cold.Adjust the freezer two notches ,and try the ice cream the next day.Repeat till you are happy with the hardness of the ice cream. It should be easy to scoop but not too soft.

Amana ABB2224DES - 5 years old - freezer is not keeping ice cream frozen it is mushy - the freezer setting has been set on 6 for a long time

Check temp. should be around 0. If not check to make sure condensor fan motor is working. Check condensor for lint. Do not put ice cream in door shelfs this is the warmest point in freezer. if has a icemaker, check to see if ice in bucket has a wet look or dry look. Wet is a not cold enough. dry is cold enough. If refrig is cycling of and on and temp is 0 , ice dry... possible bad thermastate/ sensor.

Ice Cream and frozen waffles won't freeze.

LOL ! SO in other words in plain english your repair man told you needed a brand new refrigerator - Ok from your description here we can rule out low refrigerant or compressor problems, defrost timer and controlboard issues. I too have waffles and they DO get frozen although not as hard as ice - the less water molecules they have the less they are frozen hard. but nonetheless, my waffles are NOT soft, neither is ice cream

What I would ike you to do is put one of those refrigerator/freezer type thermostats, you can get those round ones, place it in your freezer leave it there 24 hours and look again - Optimal freezer temps is 0F once compression cycles off - if you areusing the extra cold setting, -10F - For refrigerator don't go over 40F - optimal temp of 36-38F.
Another method you can place a bowl of water and use one of those probes and measure the temp of the water in your fridge. If your temps are within safety levels do not worry - your ice is frozen and your frozen food is frozen - Some ice cream tend to be softer, especially the extra creamy type. If your refrigerator has a dial to adjust temps, raise it slightly and wait 24 hours and check your temps again you might need to bump down the temps a bit - if you have a control panel and 2 settings they are usually COLD or COLDER, set it to COLDER and check again - in the COLDER setting your compressor will shut down once your freezer hits -10F that should be quite enough to have even your waffles and extra creamy icecream frozen - if some of the liquids in your refrigerator is too cold or freezes, set it back to COLD or re-adjust the dial. Once you determined that your freezer AND refrigerator are within SAFETY levels as per the food safety guidelines and using the proper methods of testing, then you have nothing to worry about. Make sure your fridge and freezer are not leaking cold air by checking your door gaskets using the famous dollar bill technique by closing the door on the dollar bill and trying to pull it out - if there is no resistence and can easily come out, you have a gasket leak - check in different places on the gasket. As long as you can determine that your freezer and fridge temps are SAFE don't spend a dime ! If your temps are NOT in the safe range you probably have leaky gaskets - if the compressor seems to run all the time, you probably have dirty condenser coils that need to be vacuumed cleaned or dusted off using a condenser brush.

Ice cream soft

Ice Cream is the hardest thing to freeze in a fridge /freezer unit , you need a least 0 deg F
to harden ice cream. If the ice cream was satisfactory before the repair and the stat is set to max. it is possible you have an over charger refrigeration circuit.

Amana SBD 522VEBONY - fridge freezer is not staying cold -

If your freezer works after regassing...and after sometime the problem occurs again. It seems to me that there is leak on the pipes in which where the gas runs, that is why it runs for sometime after regassing, after some time the gas that was loaded during regassing leaked through the atmosphere and the problem occurs again. It would be better if you replace it with a new fridge.
Hope this idea helps.
