Problem for Canon CanoScan N640P Flatbed Scanner

I am not a technical person. My 640P ex was running well in an earlier operating system. The connection to PC was with 15-20 pins. I have upgraded to XP. To the earlier 15-or 20 pin connection I attached a USB adapter. Now the PC does not even detect the Scanner.
Please HELP.

If upgrading an existing PC to Windows XP from an earlier versionof Windows, Canon recommends a "clean install" to ensure reliableoperation of drivers. If a clean install is not possible, it isessential that drivers for your existing Canon Hardware are UNINSTALLEDprior to upgrading to Windows XP. After the installation of Windows XP,the drivers for your Canon Hardware can then be re-installed. Canon has released a software utility to uninstall USB and SCSI Scanner drivers for this purpose. Click here to download this utility.It is recommended to consult our Driver Downloads page and use the latest driver for your product. Canon supports several scanner models with Windows XP. Windows XPsupport is offered for Windows XP Home Edition, and Windows XPProfessional.The following older models are not compatible with Windows XPdue to hardware design: IX-3010, IX-4015, IX-4025, CS 300S, FB310,FB61
