Or you are using more speakers than the system can load, or one or more of the speakers went down with the impedance values. That is, the problems basically is the nominal or specified impedance for the amp are between 8 to 16 ohms, if you got connected one or more speakers with less than that value, then the final amplification circuitry is working on a high current and therefore more internal heat, this the moment when it goes to a "protection function"

My ht-z31 dvd surround sound turns on and immidiatly says protect and shuts down. what do i do?

the protect means a circuit overload check that you dont have any wires for your speakers touching or backwardly installed if those are all fine you may have blown a fuse inside the receiver.

I need to make my speakers wires longer for my RCA surround sound

If your speaker have wires that are hooked directly to the speakers and there is no terminal, you will have to splice new wire onto the existing ones. Be carefull and use crimp connectors, available at Radio Shack, these connectors are best because they will keep the speaker wires from touching and damaging your unit.

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.

Sounds like you have a short in 1 of your speaker wires.Make sure none of them are touching each other at the back of the unit.

It keeps on wanting to shut off like it is overheating but yet it is not hot...(Samsung DVD home theater system HT-TX72)

Check you speaker connection first and make sure none of the wires are touching another terminal. The unit might be going into protect mode. If so it should display the words protect on the display before shuting down. Try removing one speaker at a time while turning on the unit after each speaker is removed at a time, to see if it shuts down on you. When and if it stays on then the previous speaker you took off is defective.. If none of this works then you might have a bad Preamp circuit or main amplifier output problem. Disconnect everything from the unit and turn it on, to see if it shuts down on its own, if so then there is a problem with the internal parts of the unit itself.

If the unit shuts down almost immediately without sound, you have an electronic failure of the audio amplifier.

However if you must play the unit up above quiet background levels, you likely have a shorted speaker wire. With home theater systems, you have the luxury of trying different surround modes and speaker level settings. It's not unusual, for example, to have a loose wire strand going to the center speaker. In stereo, the system works fine. As soon as you switch to a surround mode, the amplifier senses the short and shuts down to protect itself.

Check those wires really close - I bet you'll find it there.

Surround sound keeps shuting off

the system go to protect mode in case of trouble in output stage(power output component and cords and speakers.
try to connect each speaker one by one until you find the bad one change cord first for the bad one and check if not working you must change speaker itself.if all above does not solve the problem you must pass your sony to service center

Make sure that your patch cables are cumming from the audio line OUT of the TV to the audio line IN on the surround amp. A common mistake on hook up is usually the problem.
