I have an 19 HP 10000W Generac. It does the same thing ... it will start now and only run 10 sec. to 2 min. I have tried disconnecting the wire that goes from the oil switch to the circuit boards...but still no luck. What wire do you disable to keep it running?

I had the same problem with a simular generator. I took it to a repair shop who told me it was the "low oil sensor". They fixed it and it lasted another 1.5 hours. I told my-self I would monitor the oil and cut the "low oil sensor" electronic line. It has laster 12 years as a backup generator running at least 200 hours per year. I still have it but have switched to a larger generator. If you, or whoever uses it, can watch the oil level, then cut this line, it will be fine. This sensor is for those who are not able to measure oil level !!!

How to fix an off and on switch on a briggs and straton model series, 19e400 5000 watt, on and off switch located on top of the motor. is there a wire thats supposed to hook onto the switch somehow.

Kill switch should have a wire connected to the tab on the spark coil under fan cover. The switch is a means of shorting kill wire to ground. On some generators, there will be another method of shutting down the engine. Usually on/off switch will be more visable on the control panel. Most likely the switch on fan cover was not connected to prevent confusion.

1o h.p. generator, starts fine, runs good for short periods then kind of sputters, a single sputter, but every second or so and will run like that for hours, thought running would help, didn't.

I realize you have a 10 Hp Briggs engine. The symtom your describing is often caused by the valve lash gap being to narrow on the EXHAUST valve. You may have a 0.001 gap cold but when it warms up that gap is less and you get just a bit of compression blow by but not enough to impede power output. Over time it will usually get harder and harder to start. The remedy is to reset the valve tappet gap
Depending on what engine you have the GN series the gap for intake and exhaust is 0.002 with the flywheel directly at TDC.
Standard OHV Briggs are adjusted with the flywheel 1/4 inch past TDC to a gap of .004 - .006.
The Jam nuts are torqued 65 - 85 inch lbs

Non OHV engines L-head are adjusted .004 intake and .006 Exhaust at TDC by changing valve stem length with a grinder or replacing the valve if necessary.

If you still have the problem after doing the above... replace the spark Plug... (again even if yours is new) After spark plug replacement you still have the problem respond here and I will help you until this is resolved.

This could also be a case of the fuel mixture just a tad lean..

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

I have a potable generator that will not turn off.it's a 16.5 briggs vanguard v-twin motor.i replaced the coils and the diode wiring assembly.i fill the diode assembly might be backwards.is that possible?

Are you saying the engine will not turn off? The engine shut down uses a ground on the ignition circuit to shut down. This kills the circuit that provides the spark for the engine to run. See if you can trace the circuit for the shut down and check the ground connection.
