Question about Archos 604 Digital Media Player
I recorded three video files on my Archos 604 today, one right after the other, all using the exact same video line input, from the exact same video camera. All three video files play well on my Archos 604, but when I copy the three video files to my PC (using the Archos 604 as an external hard drive), the first video file plays well, but the 2nd and 3rd video files won't play on my PC. When I try to play the 2nd & 3rd video (.avi) files on my PC, the video playing software shows the following message: "copy protected video file can only be played by the original recording device".
I then recorded two more video files with my Archos 604, with the same video camera input, and these video files play well on my PC, with no problems.
I did NOT change any settings in my Archos 604 between these recordings.
How do I:
1. Enable these files to play on my PC; and
2. How do I make sure this doesn't happen again.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

If the unit was dropped, you may have to replace the battery. The batteries for those units are lithium-ion-polymer and are somewhat fragile when dropped. The other possible reason it is not working is that the shock form the drop has "bricked" or killed your unit's internal circuitry. I would also try charging it with another USB connection as the USB connection you are using may not be powerful enough to charge the unit. For more detailed help you can try the forums at ArchosFans.com There are many technical experts concerning Archos Units at that forum.

Yeah you need to go to the archos website and buy the cinema plug in (£14.99) if you want to play all. the only other option is to convert the avi files that you cant play. Also if you want to play any mpeg4 files and quite a few other files with different audio codecs you need the podcast plug in (again £14.99). This is the only way to be able to play everything on your archos without converting the files - it's a bit of a rip off as each set of plugins is specifically downloaded for a product key so you cant even get one from someone else - believe me I have tried for days to get them free!
Hope that helps!

I had the same issue.
The size of the AVI cannot exceed 1gb or the end of the movie will never play.
I had a movie that was 1,7gb. 2 hrs and 15 seconds.
The Archos recognized this as a 1.7gb file and 2:00:15 long.
As soon as the movie started, the time line bar at the bottom of the screen went from 2:00:15 to 1:10:25. Basically, it cut off the last 50 minutes of the movie.
I simply divide the movie into 1gb chunks.
I decrypt the DVD to the computer
Use Nero Recode to convert it to and MP4. Divide the movie into 1gb chunks and Maximize the Volume.
Use SUPER to convert it to an AVI / MPEG-4 / MP3.
Copy this to the Video folder of the Archos.
This is simply something that Archos does not want to admit is an issue. They want you to purchase the Cinema plugin.
