Question about Cell Phones

7 Answers

I have an unlocked/jailbroken 2g iphone with 2.0 version. All aspects of iphone work except music module. Itunes on my PC will not access iphone - wants to restore which would cause data loss and brick. I can download music directly from the iphone but I cant exchange with PC. Other programs show music on phone that I also cant access. I can only see music that I have downloaded directly to the iphone. I have itunes 8.0 - tried to go to earlier version but when I did itunes said it could not read the files because they were created with a newer version. Can u help? Is there any way to at least backup the data?

I dont want to restore the iphone because I have many contacts and other data. I have a lot of SMS history, calendar, notes, and appications as well. If i restore, I lose all of that and brick the phone. The only aspect of the iphone that seems to be not working is the interface to itunes. I can do everything else but I can't put music on it from the PC and I can't back up my data. If I could back up the data, I would restore and then unlock/jailbreak again.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I will try all the suggestions in the latest post. But I neglected to say that the iphone was completely recognized by the PC and itunes until a few days ago. I think I may have corrupted the ipod component somehow.... I have run some third party programs that have accessed itunes on the PC and iphone. But I am not sure if that is it.... Again, I need to get the data off the iphone b4 I would restore to a brick. I do have another iphone that has a broken lcd but should be recognized by the PC - not sure if this is a help. My friend suggested going to an older version of itunes but I could not successfully do that - guess itunes 8 blocks that.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

you can do a full system restore. just remove the sim card. you will then not lose any data. go to the itunes web site and download the upgraded driver to the computer. then hook you iphone to the computer. your problem should be solved.....please rate this thanks

If this would work that would be great. But I don't quite understand. First of all, I tried several times to do a system restore on my PC. I tried different dates and each time it says it is restoring but then after reboot it just reports that restore did not work. I have many checkpoints so I don't know why it wont restore. Also, that is an interesting point... can I restore my iphone w/o sim and keep all data? I thought data resides on iphone... maybe the contacts are on sim but I am not sure how to know. Also, I have an older laptop that I tried to get to see the iphone - but it wants itunes 7.7 so I am going to try an put that on. Also, I have a MAC but it also has 8.0 and also gives the message that the iphone needs to be restored. Maybe 8.0 is the culprit.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I am still a little confused. The iphone is unlocked/jailbroken for use with T-Mobile. If I restore with itunes it will brick. If I knew that I could keep all my data - contacts, apps. calendar, etc maybe I would go ahead and get someone to reunlock/rejailbreak. But I dont want to lose the data. And for some reason, my pc will not properly do a system restore.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

No I am not that frustrated - you are doing your best to help. But I am just not understanding you.... my phone is not with ATT so if itunes restores even w/o the sim, I am afraid that I will not be able to access the phone. If you are saying that I can restore the phone w/o the sim and then put the sim back in and all is like b4, then I will do that. And I will be very grateful for the help. But I have to be sure that it wont be a brick. Thanks.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I am not aware of any ability to make a backup to a memory card on the iphone. Is the memory card the sim? If so, I cant find a way to move all data to sim.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I have now restored my pc to an earlier date - as someone suggested I should try to go back a ways. Then I downloaded itunes 7.7 (after using windows installer to remove all itunes components). Now I get an error that itunes needs quicktime. So I downloaded quicktime but I keep getting version errors and reinstall itunes errors.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

So I still have the question: If I remove the sim and do a restore will I brick the iphone and lose my data? U seem to be saying that the data is on the sim, but what data? Is the 8gig just for music, etc? And all contacts, etc are on sim?
And will restore brick my phone? I think it will.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

OK - I think I get where u are coming from. And it may be the right thing to do. But let me explain my setup on the iphone: I took the phone to a shop that unlocked and jailbroke it. They told me to NOT upgrade to newer versions of itunes as it would brick the phone. So it sounds to me that I will have to restore the phone without the sim, and then it will no longer with my T-Mobile carrier. So I will have to go back to the shop and get it unlocked/jailbroken again.... My iphone software is at 2.0 and they told me that is should not be upgraded. So I guess if I do your suggestion then I will keep most of my data and have to pay again for unlock and then I will be back to square one? Is that right? Or are u saying that restore w/o sim is all that is needed and there will be no brick?

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I checked the link but it does not unlock Apple Iphone. But thanks anyway.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

Well I used windows installer to remove Itunes 8 and associated files. I went to system restore and went back about 6 weeks. Now it wont let me use the old itunes because the" itunes libraryitl was created by a newer version of itunes." I am ready to give up.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

Ok I where do I rate your answers? I think u are very good no matter what happens. I just dont understand why there is no brick - if I restore w/o sim - does it not change the software version? Software is 2.0 - r u saying that will remain unchanged because it is on the sim?

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I am not sure yet. I will try it tomorrow when I can get to a phone shop if it bricks. But it sounds good. And I think this person and the other who talked about pawnage are very good.

  • shawnbak Sep 20, 2008

I know I have already rated the answer and thats fine. But I thought about it overnight and I dont believe it is correct. The itunes software makes it clear that a restore of the phone will take it to the latest version. That would effectively remove the jailbreak and reset phone to AT&T default. I will then have removed the hack that the cellphone shop performed to unlock/jailbreak the phone. I think the "fixer" does not understand that "restoring the phone driver" will change my phone operating system to 2.1 or whatever the latest is - and allow Apple to remove my hack. That said, it does make sense to restore the phone without the sim - assuming the contacts are all stored there. Previous phones I owned u had to tell the software where to store the data - sim or phone.
I have tried to put a previous version of itunes on 2 computers but 8.0 has a block that prevents that... so I am stuck with a iphone that I cannot use the ipod function.

Restore with original firmware, not customized.
after that, enter in dfu mode and restore with your customized firmware.

DFU mode:

press home+power for 10 second , after 10 second hold up power and only continiu pressing on home. during this iphone must be connected.

The buggier the softeware Apple releases (like 2.0, apparently), the more critical this issue of updating to responsibily reliable OS software becomes since, it seems, Apple is using its customers a la MIcrosoft as guinea pigs. One HAS to update, it seems, or pay the price of using a bad OS that should not have been released in the first place. Seems ONE MONTH after 2.0, 2.01 is already addressing serious issues that should have been fixed in 2.0, but it means that, presumably, 2.1 will be even more important to users.

unlocked iphone 2g firmware 2.0.1 without a jailbreak

    u need a jailbroken iphone 2g firmware 2.0.0
    - download the iphone 2g firmware 2.0.1
    - then ALT+click (osx) or shift+click on "update" (NOT RESTORE) and select the manually downloaded iphone 2g firmware 2.0.1.
    let itunes update your iphone.

but if you are using windows os then hold down
shift key then click on restore. Then you can select firmware file. But
beware if you upgraded to version 2.1 then winpwn cannot be used to
unlocked it, since winpwn v3.0 hasn’t been relised yet. So you have to
use other software like quickpwn etc.

well if you don’t have iphone account with
at&t then don’t upgrade to 2.1 because we all are waiting for
winpwn 3.0 which can unlock iphone with v2.1 Meanwhile you can use
winpwn 2.5 beta to unlock iphone with ver 2.0.2.

Go to sleepers.net and follow the winpwn 2.5
guide. You will have to restore your phone to the 2.0.2 (or
less)firmware since winpwn 3.0 isn’t out yet. Once you’ve restored it,
download all the necessary things listed in the guide, and follow
BigBoss’ steps. It is very detailed and includes screenshots. The
troubleshooting section may also help alleviate any problems you
encounter while pwning. Hope this helps.

you need to restore the phone as well. take the sim card out once you restore the phone you will have to reinstall an upgraded driver because even though the computer might recognize your phone the phone won't recognize the computer to interface for uploads/downloads. when you remove the sim card all your personal info will be on the sim card and all the programming on the phone will go to the default settings.

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

listen i know you are frustrated but you will not lose any data it is all stored on the sim card. when you do a restore on the phone it will be as if you never used the phone. it will have gone to the default settings. once you put the sim card back in all your apps and vital info will automatically be set back to it's prevous setting like you never had the problem to begin with

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

you must remember that when you do a system restore on your computer it would have removed the drivers to the phone as well as the interface programing for itunes. you will have to install the updated driver for the phone and also the upgraded version of itunes as well

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

the sim card is your phones version of a hard drive. a memory card is a seperate chip that you insert to store music, pics, etc, however you can not store the info from the sim card to a memeory chip

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

you will not lose any stored data when you do a master reset you will lose all your info if you leave your sim card in it so just take it out. the phone has program ming that cannot be removed, however phone contacts are not a part of the internal programming and therefore are stored on the sim card.

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

look at it this way your phone is quite useless unless you have a sim card that has the authorization codes for network access. the programming is hardwired in the phone this only includes the operating formats and that is it. all the downloads which include music.pics applications are all stored on the sim card and not the phone itself so to avoid any further confusion just remove the sim card all your data is sored and cannot be lost

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

there will not be a brick you won't lose the data because the sim won't be in the phone at the time of master reset. please re rate the solution.. good luck

  • Ronald Mueller
    Ronald Mueller Sep 20, 2008

you can rate the solution when you except it this way the premium goes to the person that gave you the help. the software is hardwired into the phone not the sim. when the soft ware get's downloaded it goes into the phone as an interface the sim is not responsible for this this restart is no different than it isd on your com puter it's a reboot and that is it.

The best way to resolve this would be to uninstall the version of Itunes which you have and reinstall a lower version.

I see that you had some issues while uninstalling the Itunes. You may download the Windows installer cleanup utility using which you may uninstall the Itunes.

Than you may install the Lower version back to the computer.

Also before you do that, If it worked fine on this computer earlier you may also try the System Restore First.

After you've decided to use System Restore to
revert your system to a previous state, start the System Restore Wizard and
follow the prompts. To use the System Restore Wizard, make sure you're logged
on as an administrator, and then follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, point to All
    Programs
, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and
    then click System Restore.

    2. On the Welcome screen, click Restore my
    computer to an earlier time
    , and then click Next.

    3. On the Select a Restore Point page,
select the date from the calendar that shows the point you'd like to restore
to, as shown below, and then click Next.

Note: - ****Select a date when everything was
    working fine****

    4. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection
page, verify that the correct restore point is chosen, and then close any open
    programs.

    5. Click Next if you are ready to
proceed or click Back to change the restore point.

    6. The computer will shut down automatically
and reboot. On reboot, you'll see the Restoration Complete page, and
    then click OK.

You may always undo the System Restore OR
choose another restore point after checking your system. To do the same just
open System Restore and make the appropriate choice, you'll have an additional
task; Undo my last restoration, on the System Restore Welcome page.

Caution: - Whenever you do a system restore remember that you'll
have to reinstall any programs that were installed after the restore point
    selected.

If your restore points are not working on the PC. Than you should try the step i mentioned first to uninstall the Itunes using the Windows Installer Clean up utility and load the older version

Sometimes if the latest restore points does not work that the old restore points wor. Try going back a little longer.

Are all the function of the iphone unlocked properly?

If you are experiencing a symptom where iPhone does not appear in the
Source list in iTunes after you connect it to your Windows PC, refer to
the troubleshooting suggestions below. Note that iPhone requires a specific minimum version of iTunes.

    Resolution

    Check the iPhone Display
When you connect iPhone to your computer, the iPhone should display
an image or message on the display. If you do not see any image, refer
    to support document 305740
for troubleshooting issues where the iPhone won't turn on. In some
cases, you may see a message on the screen that says "Charging...
please wait." This indicates that the iPhone does not have sufficient
battery charge to operate and will need to be charged for several
minutes before it can be recognized in iTunes. In other cases, you may
see a message that indicates that your iPhone requires service. In this
case, see the iPhone Service FAQ for information.

    Verify Windows PC System Requirements
Be sure that your Windows PC meets the minimum system requirements to use iTunes and iPhone. This is particularly important if you are connecting iPhone to your computer for the first time.iPhone requires a specific minimum version of iTunes.

Ensure the computer's drivers are up to date
Click here for information on checking to make sure your computer's drivers are up to date.

    Check USB Connections
iPhone requires USB 2.0 to function properly. Refer to the
documentation for your computer to verify that the USB ports are
high-power USB 2.0 ports. Try connecting iPhone to a different USB
port, preferably a port that is built-in to the computer instead of an
external USB hub. Connecting iPhone to your keyboard's USB ports is not
    recommended.

    Restart your PC
In some cases, your computer's USB ports may become temporarily
disabled or you may experience other software related issues.
Restarting your PC is an easy troubleshooting step that may resolve
    this issue.

    Verify iPhone Driver/Service Installation
iPhone requires two important pieces of software to operate properly
on Windows. First, the driver must be installed; for iPhone the driver
is USBAAPL.SYS. Second, Apple Mobile Device Support must be
installed as a Windows Service. If these are not installed, see the
    Reinstall iTunes section below.

Verify that the driver is installed by connecting iPhone to the computer and following these steps:

    1. On the Start menu, click Run.

    2. In the Open field, type devmgmt.msc and click OK. A list of devices will be displayed.

    3. Scroll
down to Universal Serial Bus controllers and click the small plus sign
to expand this group. iPhone will be listed as either Apple iPhone or
Apple Mobile Device depending on the version of the driver installed.

    4. Right-click Apple iPhone (or Apple Mobile Device) and choose Properties from the shortcut menu.

    5. When the Properties window opens, select the Driver tab.

    6. Click Driver Details to view more information.

Verify that the Apple Mobile Device Service is installed and running using the Services MMC snap-in using these steps:

    1. On the Start menu, click Run.

    2. In the Open field, type services.msc and click OK. A list of devices will be displayed.

    3. View the list In alphabetical order and verify that the "Apple Mobile Device Service" status is "Started."

    4. If the status does not indicate the service is started, right-click Apple Mobile Device Service and choose Start from the shortcut menu.

    5. If the service is installed and started, right-click the service and choose Restart from the shortcut menu.
    6. If the driver is installed and the service is installed and started, check the Event Viewer for error messages.

      1. On the Start menu, click Run.

      2. In the Open field, type eventvwr.msc and click OK.

For more information on viewing or interpreting event logs in Windows, see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 308427, "How to view and manage event logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP."

    Reinstall iTunes
iPhone requires a specific minimum version of iTunes. Apple recommends using the latest version of iTunes. You can check the version of iTunes you are using by choosing About iTunes from the Help menu. Visit the iTunes download page at www.apple.com/itunes/download/ to download and install the latest version or choose Help > Check for Updates in iTunes.

While you do not normally need to remove iTunes before reinstalling
it, in some cases this is recommended. If you see a message stating
that "The software required for iPhone is not installed. Run the iTunes
installer to remove iTunes, and then install iTunes again," then iTunes
should be removed before reinstalling. For more information on removing
iTunes, refer to support document 93698.

Do you still have all the songs on your pc? If so then you can just re-download the songs so I would restore it. If you can't connect it at all then you probably will not be able to back up the data. If you still need assistance let me know. If you have a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly it would be greatly appreciated.

My iphone 2g has no sim card in it but it is stuck on the page where when i slide to unlock its only for an emergency call

It seems that your iPhone 2G is in need of activation. To accomplish this, there are 2 ways:
A. (With AT&T as your service provider)
1. If you do not already have an AT&T sim card, contact AT&T and ask for an AT&T sim card to activate service with them. Choose your plan and insert the sim card in the iPhone.
2. Connect the iPhone to iTunes and you will be prompted to follow a few steps to proceed with the activation process.
3. Sync your iPhone for the first time.
Once completed, you will have your iPhone activated and ready to use on the AT&T network.

B. (Without AT&T as your service provider)
1. You will need to download an application to jailbreak your iPhone. (This will essentially remove certain restrictions on your iPhone 2G that prevent you from utilizing your iPhone on another network, among other things).
2. Connect your iPhone to the computer and run your jailbreak application of choice.
Once completed, your iPhone 2G will be activated and jailbroken. The "emergency call" message will disappear, though you will be prompted with a "no sim card found" message until a sim card from AT&T (or another GSM carrier) is placed in the sim tray.

I updated new version of software 3.1.3 but it is nt activated it is not supporting 2g sim

Hello,
If you have a carrier locked iPhone (AT&T in the US), then simply connect the iPhone to your computer with the iPhone's USB cable and open iTunes. Upon doing so, iTunes should connect to the internet and activate your iPhone by confirming your AT&T service account via Apple's activation servers.
If your iPhone is using a Non-AT&T carrier, then you must download and use an application like Blackra1n to re-activate your iPhone and jailbreak it, if necessary.
However, please note, if you need the iPhone unlocked as well, firmware OS version 3.1.3 (currently the latest, as of this writing) is not unlockable due to the changes it makes to your baseband. You cannot downgrade your firmware OS either since the baseband changes 3.1.3 makes to your iPhone's modem are permanent.
Until a proper fix is found and released by the iPhone Dev-Team (the creators & supporters of the iPhone unlocking software), the best you can hope for is an activated, jailbroken iPhone, but sadly, not unlocked.

Connect the phone to iTunes, hold the power and home button until the phone reboots, then release the power button but keep holding the home button down. Your computer should install a new driver and the phone should be recognised in iTunes. Please note the phones screen will remain off, this is normal. Click the phone on the left pane and then click restore. This will reset the phone to it's factory settings so you can start again. Some jailbroken apps can cause the phone to not function correctly if they are incompatible with your OS version.
Hope this helps, www.PuterCare.com

Got unlocked iphone, tried to restore factory settings now its stuck on bitten pineapple...any help plz just got this phone?

Hi,
Here u can follow the steps

Step 1: Make sure you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes if you haven’t already. Download iTunes 8.2 from the link given below.
Step 2: Now connect your iPhone with your PC. You must connect it to a single usb port on the backside of your computer. Do not use any usb hub or the ports in the front as this could cause an error during update process.
Step 3: Start iTunes 8.2. Sync your iPhone with your PC so that iTunes backs-up all your important data including settings, apps, music, contacts and photos.
Step 4: You will now have to download a custom cooked firmware for your iPhone version (2G or 3G). I can’t post the download links for these files for the reasons you all know very well. Just Google “iPhone 2G Custom 3.0” (If you are using iPhone 2G) or “iPhone 3G Custom 3.0” (If you are using iPhone 3G) and use one of the torrent links to download the custom created .ipsw file.
Step 5: Once you have downloaded the required .ipsw file, Copy/Paste it into this location:
“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\” (Windows 7)
“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\” (Windows Vista)
“C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Update\” (Windows XP)
Step 6: Restart iTunes. You will now be prompted to install this firmware you just download. Just close this prompt dialog by clicking on “x” from the top right-most corner of the window.

Step 7: Now you will have to restore your iPhone to this custom firmware 3.0 that you just downloaded. Click on your phone from the sidebar in iTunes to get to this screen as shown in the screenshot below:
capture2_thumb.png
Now press and hold left “Shift” button on the keyboard and then click on “Restore” (Not “Update) button in the iTunes and then release the “Shift” button.

This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your downloaded custom firmware 3.0. Select the downloaded .ipsw file and click on “Open”.
Step 8: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps some of which are highlighted below:
asd.pngafasf.pngggg.png
Don’t do anything silly at this point. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 3.0 on your iPhone. Your iPhone screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, iPhone will restart automatically and you should now have a fully unlocked and jailbroken iPhone 2G. iPhone 3G on the hand will only be jailbroken, not unlocked. iPhone 3G users will have to wait for Dev-Team to release ultrasn0w on Cydia in order to unlock their phones.
Step 9: Once you are done with the unlocking and jailbreak process. You can now restore all your settings, apps, music, contacts and photos to the newly installed firmware version 3.0 by restoring the backup that you made in Step 3 from iTunes.

Feel free to ask me any question here should you run into any problem during the update process.

My music shows up on my iphone only while connected to itunes.

Could be a bug in the jailbreak, I have seen this before. Restore the iPhone to original stock, locked software and re-jailbreak and unlock using the latest method from QuikPwn Dev Team. Once completed, it should resolve the issue.
