If messages are larger than the MTU they are divided into smaller packets before they can be sent. All networks have different MTU's which the owner of the network set at what they want to set it at. 576 is a very common MTU if you connect through PPP. 1500 is the most common MTU for Ethernet connections. The Xbox Live system requires your network to have a certain Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU). MTU values are important to the performance of online games. If this test fails, you can adjust the MTU setting on your network router or equivalent device to resolve the problem. Xbox live requires the network you use to have a maximum MTU. This is key to online gamesing. If the MTU fails then you have to adjust the router you are using. If you cannot access the router to adjust the MTU the you will not be able to play online games.
check on the MTU settings of ur 2wire.
This are the steps to see what ur MTU setting is:
>connect a computer to the 2wire
>open Internet Explorer, Safari or Firefox
>enter this on the address bar: gateway.2wire.net/management
>enter ur system password (in case u forget this, click on i forgot my password to get a hint)
>look for Advance in the column on the left
>click on configure services
>on the bottom, u shud see the MTU number
** i searched online and accdg to xbox tech support, ur MTU should be in the range of 1364 to 1500 **
>click on submit after u change the setting
just in case youve entered the correct MTU setting but it still does not work, u might need to contact either xbox or ur internet service provider.
Access the routers setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 (ip address of the router) on the address bar on IE.
then on basic setup page at the bottom part of the page you will see MTU normally its on auto,
to change the value set it to manual. ask your isp what is their prefferred value for the mtu you can go as high as 1300 to 1500.

what kind of router are you using to connect your xbox 360 to? usually you can define the MTU size in the router configuration.. default for xbox 360 live is 1364 ... check out your web configuration on your router to see if you can change this!
we had the same issue. Here is how we fixed it. I had the xbox 360 plugged directly into the westell 6100 modem via ethernet cable. the mtu test failed everytime. I was extremely frustrated and called microsoft and verizon (dsl) about 10 times each and they kept giving me the wrong solution. (get a new modem, get a new server, pay us money and we'll figure it out etc...) Here is what a man at microsoft told me to do and finally it worked. Power cycle your equipment (unplug modem and xbox 360 for 30 sec.) then, plug in modem first and wait until all lights are back on. Then plug in xbox and run test. In my case mtu failed again. I was then instructed to go to my dashboard and restore xbox to factory default which I did and rerun the test. This time everything FINALLY passed. We were in business. I then decided to try connecting through my airport extreme router. I power cycled again starting with the airport then the modem then the xbox and ran the test and unbelievable as it sounds it all passed and my son is now sitting happily on the couch playing a game online with his xbox 360. This took away days of my life to get this simple thing done. I was given codes to change and change back on the computer, phone calls to everyone and the solution was so simple when you finally reach a knowledgeable person. Hope this will help save someone else the time I spent!
