Question about Troy Bilt 5.5hp Self Propelled Mower

2 Answers

Model Series 860

I have a new Troy Bilt 860 Self Propelled mower. I has been squeeking and today the self propulsion stopped working, it is cutting and can be manually pushed. My nearest Repair centre is 25 miles away. It it obviously under warranty as I bought it at Lowes about 6 weeks ago. There are lots of Small engine repairers in the area. I noticed first time out level one had me nearly running. Earlier today level one was sluggish before it stopped altogether. Is it the belt? Is it the cable? Is it something worse?
Any Thoughts

Took it to repair shop that Lowe's recommended as it was under warranty.
Technician said they had had 7 bad transmissions inside a week!
I thought Troy Bilt was a good company to go with.
Anyway it is still being worked on... its been nearly 3 weeks so I should get a call soon.

    Thanks again

Thanks for message about Troybilt, it is still in repair shop awaiting Transmission which is on back order. At least with snow arriving I am not going to be mowing my lawn.
Will make sure I don't buy MTD products in future.

    Thanks

Machine still in shop awaiting new transmission.... luckily we are in the mountains and winter has set in.
Sound like Troybilt have serious problems.
Hope that the person with the squeek has a dealer within range.
Hope your solution works it could save him months of waiting.

Mower will not self propel and has always made a strange noise.

  • dnmccrary Apr 29, 2009

I also bought this mower from Lowes last year. From the get-go it squeaked, one front wheel kept coming loose from the frame, and oil slowly drips out the engine. No one in my area is interested in doing the warranty work on it... "I'm too busy to get to it..."

This mower is a piece of #$!&! There is no belt adjustment. No Idler pulley. Nothing! And hard to work on!!! Just getting to the belt is a major overhaul. Don't buy! Or if you have just bought, take it back!

just a note on your comment about troy-built - mtd now owns troy built - the quality is gone - if you go to lowes central tractor etc and want to buy one of thier cub cadets or john deere etc look under the seat - you will see whom they are built by - MTD - the consumer doesnt even know - as far as im concerned this is false advertising

.30 is the standard for most lawn mower engines...you might check the "engine specifications" in your owner's manual to be sure.

Own a Troy Bilt self-propelled model #12A-466-M011 for a year now. It worked great when first got it. Now it will not clear the grass underneath so cuts off every 15 feet and have to manually clear grass...

I had the same problem with my Troy-Bilt self propelled lawn mower. You have to use the grass catcher if your grass is high. Also, I mowed wet grass and it made my belt slip off the pulley and created a new problem, somowing wet grass is definitely not a good idea.

Carburator issue. If you have some mechanical abilty you can pull the carb off else take it to a shop. You probably left gas in it off season. Either the main jet is clogged or the float valve is stuck. Either way, remove the carb, tae off the bottom cover and clean everything out with gum out or a carb cleaner. reassemble and eveything should be fine.

You need to remove a pulley to put the new belt on.

Engine tied up within 5 minutes of use.

You can remove the spark plug and see if the engine revolves.  However, I'd take it back and let them replace it.  I've never had any trouble returning things to Lowe's.  Small engines don't have oil pumps they are splash lubricated.

Troy Bilt self propelled mower

Cribrat 1;

Please don't be offended but are you sure you are putting it on the right way. A lot of the mowers out today have guards that prevent the belt from coming off the pulleys if there is a foreign object caught up when they are being used. These guards are actually post that are fastened to the chassis of the mower. Troy built is a top name mower so I'm sure their design is reliable. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Does the tension on the belt seem adequate? Is there a tension adjustment. (an idler pulley with an adjustment)?

Hope this helps Good Luck Loring Please give me a rating Thks
