A friend of mine gave me a laptop... he said if I could fix it I could have it. The only thing I can get it to do is flash the battery light when it's plugged into the charger, and it will power on for about 3 seconds, then shut back off... nothing comes on the screen, and only the fan and drives can be heard. Can somebody give me a starting point?

it is because the slot in which your memory is loose.try changing the slot of your ram

Inspiron 5100 bios a32, keyboard

You can try reseating the keyboard connector. If that doesn’t work, the keyboard needs to be replaced. To reseat the keyboard connector, follow this link: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins5100/en/sm/keyboard.htm#1084976
Be sure to remove AC power and the Battery.

Dell Inspiron 600 Laptop, stop working.

This is generally a problem with the battery or a memory chip. Start by removing the battery and starting up on the power supply only. Dell batteries are notorious for causeing a no start. Then try removing the memory and try one chip at a time in both slots. If neither of these work, then I'm afraid you have a failed system board component, ans you will probably want to take it in for a professional diagnostics. Also, you can find a diagnostics light codes list for your machine at Dell's support site.

if you can hear the one beep sound when booting that means your laptop's system is in good condition. try putting it in the external monitor if still you cant see anything both in external and the LCD just install the old keyboard and press the Fn then external monitor... hope this helps...
