Question about Whirlpool 25.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with In-Door-Ice Dispensing System

Side by Side Whirlpool Refrigerator: Refrigerator is freezing food

We have Whirlpool Model No. ED25PEXHW00 and it has recently started freezing everything in the refrigerator side. We have tried adjusting both the controls in the refrigerator and freezer side and nothing has worked. We have also tried unpluging it for a while and that didn't work either. Is there something that we can try before we have to call out a technician?

    Huuum,

Is it possible that the freezer being so full could have led the motor to stop operating. That is what we are dealing with now. I thought that maybe it was running for so long that it just wore out. Please let me know what you opinion is. I am sure at this point we are looking at an expensive repair.

    Thanks again,

I have a whirlpool side by side refrigerator model # D25TQ which is about 10 years old and just since the first of this week, (approximately 3 days) its started freezing everything in the refrigerator side. I initially thought that maybe it was because we've had a very colder than normal fall so I turned the temp settings to warmer on both freezer and refrigerator side hoping this would eliminate the problem, but to my dismay, it didn't. I got up this morning and EVERYTHING in the refrigerator was frozen solid. The water dispenser in the door is frozen solid. I have cut off the breaker to the fridge and am HOPING that maybe it will resolve itself but if this doesn't work, have you any other suggestions?

Thanks so much! I really can't afford to buy a new fridge.

Hi, riverbyfarm
You did try what i would of recommended first!
The resetting of the system by, turning off the controls of the freezer and the fridge first and then unplugging it or if you can't reach the plug, to throw the breaker off for 5 minutes!
That is a possibility in the order that I described!!!!!

Second I ask, is the freezer packed full to the hilt with packages?
In some refrigerators if the frozen food covers the air vents in the freezer cause they are plied sky high and deep in the freezer it can cause a problem.
The freezer and fridge share the air and have to have the vents or passages free so to allow sharing of the cold air!
Let me know if the measures as I prescribed have an affect.

Waiting for your reply!
Bless You Huuum

    Riverbyfarm,

I do not think the cause was the freezer being packed to the top for the compressor dying.
It would have let you know right away by the fridge side being warm enough for you to feel the problem. The freezer and the fridge share air and if not it gets warm in the fridge!

You may want to try service once before running out and getting a new one.
Perhaps the coolant leaked out or is so low the compressor will not kick in!
Or perhaps it is only the thermostat needs to be replaced!!

You are not sure the compressor is dead till you try at least one service call to check it.

If it's not the compressor needing to be replaced,( which is expensive for a 8 year old fridge.) then you saved the price of the new fridge for a while.
Here is an interesting article that I just read!

    Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
    in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

    Follow these guidelines:

    When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
    Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

    When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

RiverByFarm, let me know how it turns out.
Thanks for giving me the opportunity to help!

This may not be the problem now but by the sound of the malfunctioning ice maker, it could be in the future. The start device on some models of refridgerator for maytag and whirlpool have been recalled. If your appliance was manufactured in the last 5-10 years you may be having an issue with this component. Mine recently caught on fire at this device that is located near the compressor. If you would like to be a part of the petition for a recall on this appliance contact me at jboooor@hotmail.com
