You can install xp on a vista laptop, you will need an xp install cd and you will need to backup your data (it will be erased in the downgrade process). As for the drivers, go to your laptops manufactures site. They will have a support section for your laptop model where you can see if there are drivers for xp. If you have the hardware that will support windows 7, I would go with that. Xp is slow and no longer supported by Microsoft as of April 2014, which poses a security risk. Windows 7 will be supported for a while and is faster and more stable than xp or vista.
Hopefully this may help: 1. Go to your device manager on window 7, locate the info on camera, right click on the device and a window should pop up with properties with the link to see if there is a updated driver for the camera system, click on this and let windows search for it, if found it will tell you so. (make note of all the information about the driver (name, version, etc.) you will need it to check elsewhere if not automatically located. 2. Try going to Windows Solution/support web page, they may already have the driver download there. for your model. Post the question in the support search box you may get a surprise that there is a driver update link there. Good luck.

It could be that you need xp drivers for your sata hd, but it can be a problem 'cos even when you get it, xp cd will not even start to let you install them. Maybe you find bootable drivers, i don't know. Or maybe you obtain some -special version of xp with drivers for your sata preppared. And finally you can just install Vista, it should have the drivers.
use a vertualization software "vmware workstation" and you would be able to work on xp without installing it physically. this software is used to run several operating systems at one time.
link is http://www.vmware.com/products/ws/
you can use the trail version for 30 days
