Question about Televison & Video
Most likely there it's the Y buffer upper and lower and the Y Main board. There is a guy on ebay who will rebuild these three boards for $190. A good way to test if this is the problem is to pull the back off the screen and find the Ybuffers on the far left side. Turn the set up but becareful not to touch anything inside except for the 8 aluminum heatsinks on the board. If after a minute they are hot to the touch (can't keep your finger on them) Then the buffer is bad. There is an actual way to test this with an Ohm meter but so far with these symptoms this is the cause. Do all three boards at once, because the buffer damages the Y main and vise versa.

This sounds like a voltage problem .... I bet it is in a busy circuit ... do oyu have a long extension cord? try to plug it into a different plug far from other electrical use ... or next time it goes black look to see what all you have turned on near it. 2 cures buy a power conditioner (furman) or a battery backup that will manage the voltage.

Our LG 50" plasma tv screen went black after a popping noise but still had sound, after great diliberations decided to take the back off and have a peek!
We unplugged the tv and tested the fuses (there were three we could see) one had blown, the one on the left as you look at the back of the tv it also has one above it. We wrote the code/seriel number down and took the fuse to the electrical wholesalers Maplin and bought a pack of 10 fuses for £1.29 replaced the fuse in the tv and everything now fine!!!!!!
Hope this might be of use to anyone whose lost the picture after a loud popping/snacking noise but still has sound.
