dear doneb,
"DDE" means Dynamic Data Exchange. It is used in windows2.0 and also used in some places higher versions of windows. So it is not a spyware or malware. You can disable it by followin the steps below.
>Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click
>Administrative Tools.
>Double-click Computer Management, double-click Services and Applications, and then
>double-click Services.
>In the Details pane, click Network DDE.
>On the Action menu, click Properties.
>On the General tab, in Startup type, select disable, and then click OK.

Those error codes don't really mean very much to the general consumer, but blue screens of deaths are caused by bad RAM memory in your computer, not viruses. I'm going to take a guess that your computer is either several years old and/or it constantly get quite warm? Heat can shorten the life of computer components by quite a bit. You may need to get one of your RAM cards replaced to solve this issue.

There's a free program called Memtest86 that you can run to determine if this is the case. It will scan all your memory and look for bad sectors. You can download it here: http://www.memtest86.com/ and burn it to a CD. What it does is create a bootable CD that will execute the program as the computer turns on to scan all the memory. There are full instructions on their website. The process can take an hour or two depending on how much memory your computer has, and if it turns up any bad sectors then you know what your problem is.

A computer can run with bad sectors in the memory, but it makes it unstable that it will keep bluescreening, so if you have bad sectors in your memory it might be better just to replace the RAM. Luckily, this isn't too expensive. For instance, if your computer has 4GB of memory, it probably has 2 2GB RAM cards installed. You can get a 2GB replacement notebook memory for, I'd say $30 or $40. Installing RAM is very simple, and if you're willing to install it yourself, it won't cost you more than that.

Volvo V-70 drivetrain & electronics faults

I suspect you have some loose connections or shorts in the wiring harness. I've had similar strange things happen with an Olds Bravada. Various transmission shifting problems, faults, etc. that all seemed to come from the engine's computer system getting incorrect voltages and readings due to wiring faults/shorts.

I was trying to backup my server while exchanging DLT tapes, the tape in use light stayed on and the serve would then alternate to four flashing lights and then back to flashing "Tape In Use...

Hello,

Try the following action to resovle your issue:

1. Run the Drive Assessment Test in HP StorageWorks Library and Tape Tools.

CAUTION: Running the Drive Assessment Test overwrites the tape. If it is not possible to

overwrite the tape, run the logs-based Device Analysis Test instead.
2. Check the backup logs.

3. Verify that a supported configuration is being used.

4. Check for media damage:

o Incorrect label placement

o Broken, missing, or loose leader pin

o Damaged cartridge seam

o Usage in incorrect environment

5. Check for software issues:

a. Check the backup software.

b. Check that virus scanning software is not scheduled to run at the same time as the back-up.

6. Verify that a tape can be formatted.

Tape Error LED is flashing:

1. Reload the suspect tape. If the Tape Error LED stops flashing, the problem has cleared.

2. Load a new or known good tape. If the Tape Error LED stops flashing, the problem has cleared.

3. Reload the suspect tape. If the Tape Error LED flashes, discard the suspect media as faulty.

From my experience, most of the time it is a bad tape, using a new tape usually solves the problem. If after inserting a new tape and the problem exist, you may need to update your firmware/backup software.

Good Luck

Go to START >>> RUN then type msconfig..(click on OK). It should bring up System Configuration window. Go to STARTUP tab then un-tick the entry you think is the DOS Command String. This should disable it from running during startup. Restart the computer.

My HP Photosmart C4280 all in one printer will not print...can you help?

Do/did you get any error messages?
Check that the printer is online and check the printer queue (Devices and Printers in Win7). Try a new USB cable and plugging the printer into a different port. If you have a print server or USB hub, try connecting directly to the computer.

Reset the printer by unplugging it and the USB cable. (If files are built up in the queue and the printer is online, try deleting them. If they don't delete, you need to stop and restart the printer spooler. In any version of Windows from a command prompt window, type "net stop spooler" without the quotes and hit <enter>. On the next line type "net start spooler" again without the quotes and <enter>. Restart the computer.)

Other issues are possible if there are any error messages that you don't mention.

I hope this helps.

It is good that semantec that is Norton is protecting your computer. But still , i would suggest you to download and run malwarebytes to scan the computer.
use the following link: www.malwarebytes.com
Also, turn on the window firewall.

A 2 MB xlsx file is taking long time to open and save - consuming 50% of CPU - making Excel screen go white - using 55 MB RAM - auto calculation off - any ideas to resolve this

Solution 1.) If you have installed PDF maker, which can get installed when you install scanner software, the Excel add-on can potentially cause Excel to open slowly. This is more common in Office 2007.

* Close Excel and any other window you have open
* Open "My Computer" and browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART
*

* When you open Excel, check to see if the time it takes to open the xls/xlsx is shortened.

Solution 2.) This can be fixed by reinstalling Office but there is a faster way to fix this .

* Go to your Control Panel, (click on Start then Click on Control Panel)
* Click on Folder Options, then File Types,
* scroll down to and select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files),
* click Advanced and select Open entry,
* click the edit Button.
* deselect "Use DDE"
* append "%1" (include the quote marks) to the end of the application command line,
* Remove /dde if it is at the end of the command line
* Then click on OK three times.

If the issue was being caused by DDE, then when you now open a Word doc file or Excel els; they will now open faster, without a long pause.
