Sounds like you are trying to activate a voice recorder while you are talking on the phone (this would only record one side of the conversation anyway - yours). I use one, too, and it took me a minute to set up right. You need to plug one end into the digital in on your pc, or your recorder, and take the phone line from your phone, put it into the slot on the control, then take the phone jack from the control into your phone. Now, this is for a corded phone, but i cannot imagine it being any different for a cordless, as it, too, plugs into a wall somewhere.
Since I record directly to my pc, using WavePad, i don't know anything about the play button on the controller. I read that it would be used, somehow, to play the recording on the actual tape, but i realy don't know.
This is a phone system phone. If you can record conversations it would be a feature of your voice mail on the system (the phone itself cannot do this). If it all worked, you should have the recording in your voice mail box. It may be in with recorded messages or there could be a separate location. Example: Press 1 to hear your messages, press 2 to hear your recordings, press 3 to change your password, etc...
