Boot your computer in Target disk mode if you have another computer around, so you can treat the HD of the Macbook as an external.
Another possibility which would cost you more but is probably a bit safer on your data is to get a new drive, install it (a Macbook, having a user swappable HD, makes this easy) and do a fresh install of your OS on your Macbook from your disk. Put your HD in an external case and only try to get your precious data off of it when your machine is stable and reliable.

Thanks for using Fixya!

Check for a failing hard drive
Trying booting from the Mac OS X install disc. insert the Mac OS X install disc. press the start button, while holding down the "C" key on the keyboard
Once you are running from the disc. go to Disk Utilities select the hard drive click the "repair permissions" button at the bottom.
If you get any red errors listed or it doesn't seem to finish repairing the permissions you have a failing hard drive and it will need to be replaced.
If the repair permissions finishes without any problems. You will have to reinstall the operating system.

Restart your mac. As it's restarting/booting up, hold down the command, option, R and P keys simultaneously. As it's booting up and you're holding these keys, you should hear the startup chime, continue to hold the keys down, it will cycle and you'll hear the startup chimes again. Let it go thru this cycle 7 (seven) times before you let up on those keys. Once it's cycled 7 times, let it boot up normally.
If that doesn't work, then reinstall the original system software that came with the Macbook. You may have to reformat the hard disk and do a clean install.

When booting up my laptop it has a gray screen with the apple for a minute and then it turns to a circle with a slash through it

Boot from the CD/DVD that came with your Macbook. Launch 'Disk Utility' and perform 'Repair Disk' as well as 'Repair Disk Permissions' on your boot drive and hopefully that will fix the issue.

If that doesn't do it, try holding the Option key during startup to select the boot disk and select your Mac HD. If it boots in this manner there are rumors about some bad SuperDrives out there causing this boot issue. So you may want to boot it while holding "D" and run the Apple Hardware Test from the DVD/CD.

Hello I agree with benwabnick, I would also try to repair disk permissions and volume using the disk utility tool that is on the install DVD (hold the C key to boot from DVD, then choose english language, go to utilities, and choose disk utility).
