Boot your computer in Target disk mode if you have another computer around, so you can treat the HD of the Macbook as an external.
Another possibility which would cost you more but is probably a bit safer on your data is to get a new drive, install it (a Macbook, having a user swappable HD, makes this easy) and do a fresh install of your OS on your Macbook from your disk. Put your HD in an external case and only try to get your precious data off of it when your machine is stable and reliable.

Thanks for using Fixya!

My dell xps one will not boot because of a disk read error problem, what can i do?

If you can boot from your Resource CD, then your hard drive is defective or it's OS (Operating System software) is corrupt and needs to reloaded. You should have a CD that came with your computer called "Resource CD" or "System Tools". Under contents of CD look for "Diagnostics". You can boot from this CD by powering on computer and selecting key to reach the Boot Menu. Inset CD and boot from CD/DVD drive.

Hello,
I do not think the issue should be with hardware. Please try following:

1. Boot the system with linux disk and go till partitioning. Select there to clear all the partitions and turn off the machine after taking out the disk.
2. Go in BIOS and in advanced tab you will find SATA option. Set it as IDE or SATA from ASCI.( for windows XP only ).

Boot from the Windows disk and then try to install the windows.

Thanks

You might have bad memory, a corrupted registry file, corrupted system files. Try starting up in Safe mode then backup your data. Goto My Computer and right click on the hard drive and select properties. Goto Tools tab and select error checking of hard disk on startup. Might need to reinstall Windows
