Look at the bottom of the shaver where the AC cord plugs in. Carefully pry the small black piece of plastic out of the base. Once you have this out, the two chrome side pieces will fall off, and you can split the shaver in half to expose its inner workings.

I am trying to remove the pivoting head from my Braun 8585 ... removed screen and cutters and the two screws under the cutters but cannot see what else to do to get the head removed

The swivel frame can not alone be removed from the shaver. It is part of a component called a 'drive unit' which icludes the motor. You will find a disassembly video at See link below and scroll down for video

While shaving, I start into stubble and the sound (almost like the speed) ratchets up and doesn't seem to want to cut.It doesn't seem to want to get better until I approach very slowly with very light...

I would speculate that the oscillator on the swivel frame is broken making it difficult for the blade to move correctly. If tis is the case, you will need to replace it. You will find this part at See link below

Shaver is getting very loud

Most likely, the swivel frame that the foil snaps onto has a broken piece(s) of plastic inside making a buzzing sound. If this is the case, you will need to replace the drive unit. You will find this part for model 8585 at See link below

During shaving the shaver makes a loud grating noise. It works fine otherwise. Even during the cleaning cycle, there is a bit more of that noise. Could it need a new battery?

Most likely, the noise is caused by vibration of a broken piece of plastic in the swivel fframe. If this is the case, the part required to fix it for model 8585 can be found at See link below

My Braun shaver 8585 has died. Foil, cable, box, Clean and charge unit as new. Which Braun shaver replaces Braun 8585 and can utilise good pieces?

If I understand correctly, the shaver is dead but all other components are in good condition. If this is the case, you should consider ordering a replacement lower unit. See link below

Newer models made by Braun do not use all the same parts as your shaver so this would be a good way to go

Braun Pulsonic model 9595. Trimmer will not close properly. Can I repair this myself?

The trimmer is replaceable and can be purchased as an assembly You will T-6 and T-8 torx drivers to take apart the head end of the shaver. Using these tools, remove the swiveling head, the hold down cover over the motor assembly, and then pop off the drive arm for the trimmer. Now the broken trimmer assembly can be slid out of the end of the shaver by carefully prying between the case where the on/off button is located and the black trimmer assembly base with a small flat blade jeweler's screwdriver. The new trimmer assembly can then be slid into the case and the shaver reassembled. Just be sure the ends of the retraction spring on the new trimmer assembly are installed over the little chrome retaining lugs for them or your trimmer will not fully retract (my trimmer assembly arrived with the spring ends loose and not retained by the lugs).
