You stated in your solution to check the diodes to see if they look OK. How would they look if they are not OK?? Would they appear burned? Is there another way to test the diode and the capacitor to see if it is functioning properly. I can get Valsi to ship the parts to me from Mexico, but don't want to buy both items if it is not necessary. Thanks for the response.
The diodes should look burned/split you would be able to pysically see if they have blown. If the diodes seem to be ok then they are best left alone as they are soldered in place and are not the easiest things to replace. The correct sized capacitor shouldn't be too expensive around £20 sterling/ $40 dollars. You could also check to see if the windings are down by checking the continuity through the windings with a multimeter ( should be continuous ). If not then i am afraid you would need to change the complete alternator!! The diodes should cost only pennies and are worth getting just in case. The capacitor needs to be checked with a suitable meter capable of mesuring capacitance they are not a common item to come by and need to be used by someone with reasonable electrical knowledge. Aside from that there isn't much else that could be causing you a problem other than obvious things like damaged/broken wiring or circuit breaker/fuse problems. If i were you, i would go ahead and buy the capacitor and try it, sending it back if it doesn't work. Hope this helps.

On Thursday last week I had 220 amp outlet being used and a 110 amp outlet being and overloaded the generator. It turned out to be the reset breakers failed to trip and blew the capacitor. The reset breakers I would suggest replacement after 7 years very easy to do on a 5500 Valsi generator 2010 model still running and now producing electric. And of course use only regular gas non Ethanol.
How long have you had this generator? Has the generator worked on all of these loads before? Model 5500 is a 5500 Watt generator which could easily be 5500 watts (Peak) and not continuous.
Your AC is an inductive load. Your lights are resistive loads
An inductive load can cause issues when starting due to an increased current demand at start up that some generators cringe under. Do the lights flicker or are they stable? I'd say your diodes on your stator are working if you have light stability but you haven't provided nearly enough information for a detailed solution.
I'm sure you have enough voltage but you aren't getting enough current to run specific loads. How many watts is your AC? How many watts for your microwave? Both of these units demand a great deal of energy to run and when you place too much demand on your generator, it will choke it out and eventually, will cause damage to the generator. You may consider getting a beefier generator with a greater amount of wattage output.
Seeing these specs online and noting what you are trying to run, you have an undersized generator and need to get one that can produce a greater amount of running wattage (as well as peak wattage).
Valsi 7500 watts/13hp tecumsa engine. Was running fine and then started surging like it was going to die and then it ran out of gas. Put fuel in it and now it wont start. Gets fire and has plenty of gas. Problem???
Typical diodes are 10 amp for these. The stator and rotor both have VERY low resistance readings. The reading typically will be below that which will register MEANINGFULLY on the digital meters.
My generator had 10 amp diodes with surge protectors across them. One of the protectors shorted and generator output was zero. Mine is a 6KW diesel silent unit.
Replaced the diodes with 70 amp ones with surge protectors that have 20 times the energy absorbtion as the originals. Unfortunately this required some lathe work to make holders for the diodes and the surge protectors to ride on the rotor.
Used the light bulb trick to remagnitize it once diodes were replaced.
Two suggestions. One: check for voltage from the secondary coil wires (if it has one). Two: unless stated do not do this, I have always flashed the excitor circuit through the 120vac receptical. Give these a shoot and I hope it works for you.
Reset / tickled? There are resistors and diodes in the end of the alternators rotor (the bit in the middle that spins) If these look ok visually then change the capacitor which is a barrel shaped object usually with 4 prongs on the end. Without a capacitor the genset will not produce a voltage.
