When i am ironing all the power in the house goes off and it is a brand new iron

I have the same problem! The iron is new, I'm not using an extension lead, and haven't installed the plug myself. It has happened every time I have used the iron (about 6 times), and today I broke a new record - 6 power outs during one ironing session. The iron is a Sunbeam Ultra 55 Platinum.

I'll try it in a different room next time.....

Patrick,
The iron may actually be ok. If not, remember that because it's new it will come with a guarantee.

Did you put the plug onto the iron yourself? Check inside the plug to make sure that there's no bare wires that can touch as the cord flexes as you iron. This would cause it to short and throw the power in the house.

Try using the iron in a different room. If you get the same problem then there's possibly a wiring fault (maybe a broken/worn insulation on the wires of the iron cord ... though as it's new, I would doubt this).

Are you using an electrical extension lead to plug the iron into? If you haven't overloaded the socket with other electrical appliances it may be that the extension cable has a broken/faulty/loose wire inside that when they touch, causes the power to go off. A few years ago the power in my house used to go off on occasions whenever someone went to the fridge. The fault was traced to split insulation on one of the wires in the extension cable I was using. Whenever somebody stood on the cable it shorted out and cut the power.

To be really sure - go into a neighbours and use the iron! If the power goes off - it's the iron at fault. If not, it's probably just a small problem like worn insulation/loose/broken wire in an extension lead in your own house.

Would probably be best to buy a new iron, not powering on, would indicate a internal problem, really in my opinion it would be best to buy a new one. without knowing more about the iron you have..

I HAVE A BLACK AND DECKER IRON-DIGITAL ADVANTAGE, POWER IN THE IRON GOES ON AND OFF NEED TO KEEP ON HOLDING THE POWER WIRE INTO THE IRON, SO I TRIED TO OPEN THE WIRE SECTION,BUT IT NEED A SPECIAL TOOL TO...

Bring the iron to a Hardware store, ask for a set of tools right for the type of screws (maybe Torx, Security Torx, tri-wing, bristol and others).

Once you can open the iron and access to the cord you may change the power cord. it is easy.

Power goes on & off because the power cord is broken. This failure is very common on irons.

Good luck

My iron trips the safety switch and causes a blackout of a third of the house. Is there anywhere I can get it checked for free? I live in East Fremantle, Western Australia. It cost $130 about 12...

This must be easay if you have a multimeter to check, The power plug must have a clean continuity to the coils of the iron. It is possible that the cord is short and so the short seems to make the circuit trip. To confirm remove the main power cord from one end and check for short in the wire. If the mains and neutral shows a short with one wire taken off from the iron then the wire is short. If not the short is within the iron that can be checked in the similar manner. It can also be a very minor problem of a wire sticking to short within in the control.
There are many good brands, Philips, Rowenta,Black and Decker, Panasonic etc.. choose one which suits your need.

hello,

some time no part of our property go bad but what will need is to service them from there dysfunction

the problem of your iron could be from the element and the wire ,the element is the heat provider while the wire is the power supply from the electric

But the fact is that ,the problem of your iron is disconnection of element from the wire what you need to do fix it to unscrew your iron and trace the wire down to the element and see the disconnection am toking about and fix it back

thank you and thanks for using fixya.

Power won't come on

You have a short in the cord. If you knew where the short was, you could possibly repair it. However, I would strongly suggest buying a new iron. An iron is an appliance that can burn your house down even when it's in GOOD working order. You should be able to buy a decent iron for around $30, and I would say the peace of mind alone would be worth it. Hope this helps,

Unless you have a 5 or 6 hundred dollar iron, there is an excellent rule of thumb when an iron quits working. Buy a new one. These days, irons can be purchased cheaply enough that it is WELL worth the money. Not just for the convenience, but for the safety issues. This is an appliance that could burn your house down even if it's in PROPER working order. Hope this helps!!
