Hp psc1100 1.0 (32-32) & WIA hp psc...

I haven't used the printer for scanning for some time . Yesterday when trying I am now offered two choices both hp psc1100 1.0 and WIA-hp 1100 1.0 . If I choose the first the HP logo INVENT appears as usual and then I receive an error message . The gist of which is -scanner could not be initialized because it could not be found . (Of course over the two days I HAVE uninstalled and reinstalled it . Windows "sees" it.). It does this TWICE without further input beyond clicking OK on the first message. If I choose the WIA option I receive the "choose screen " (color or text black and white ect) choosing preview I receive an error message - " an error occourred . If another program is scanning please wait for it to finish . If I choose scan something flashes on the screen ( too fast to capture) and that's it. As I said above I have uninstallrd and reinstalled several times . Perhaps this is a know issue. I run XP sp2 (not 3 yet).
