I think it's the memory try this:

remove the memory(the one rectangular chip attached in the mainboard) then clean the contact using eraser then reattach it

I have a refurb'd hp compaq 7100 - it will not boot up - begins bootup protocol and immediate shuts down - orange light begins flashing and it beeps. Will not start with a boot CD. What is going wrong?

The processor is probably getting too hot. If it's refurbished, it is likely that an unexperienced technician put it together without removing and re-applying the heat silicone compound on the processor and heat exchanger. It will shut down if the temperature reaches the threshold level the BIOS senses.

I can not start HP compaq dc 7100 CMT. starting four beep

Hello there, this means the machine has an internal hardware failure. 4 beeps almost always indicates the memory (RAM) has gone bad in the machine. If you are unsure of how to put new ram in the machine yourself you are going to need to contact a local service person to do this, it should not be too expensive. If you need help locating someone in your area please respond to this answer with your zip code and I will find someone for you.

Please make sure you rate my answer 4 thumbs up, it is extremely important to me. I would be forever grateful if you could do so. If you need more help on this question please just respond to my answer here and I will get right back to you.

Thanks
Tim

What is the part number for upgrading the memory for my MS-6368 Micro-ATX Motherboard? Upgrading to 1GB

You can go to the MSI website for your product (http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/product_detail.asp?model=VIA_PLE_133_5a_Lan#) , then click the link for memory recommendation, either Crucial or Kingston.

An easier method is to go to the Crucial web site (www.crucial.com) and run their system scanner. It will tell you exactly what's currently in your system, and options for upgrade.
Note: You must be running IE to use their tool, and you must accept installation of their Active-X plug-in.
