Here's something to try:

1) Make sure you are inserting your DVD in a DVD drive. (Usually has a DVD logo on the tray.)
2) With the computer on, insert a DVD in the DVD drive and wait for a box to pop-up. (If a box does not pop up, Go to "My Computer" and double-click on the DVD drive.)
3) Choose to open in a software capable of playing DVDs. (Windows Media Player, PowerDVD, ect.)

If the the software does not play the DVD, this could indicate a missing codec or a hardware problem.

My device normally plays DVDs VCDS AND CDS. however now it plays only VCDS AND CDS. i;m suspecting my DVD driver is bad. what do i do

For the sake of about $35 or less you can buy a brand new drive which will also support a pile of other disc typed including DVD9. Im not sure what youre like on the insides of computers but its only the sake of 2 plugs which can only go 1 way and a few screws and you're better than new. I know what i'd and cheers from Scott and plz dont forget to vote

My hp pavilion a305w will not let me play dvds

First of all you'll need a DVD-Rom Player. If you go to my computer and you see the drives you have. Drive C and

DVD-Rom station or CD-rom Station.
If it's not listed you don't have a DVD-rom player and you can never play dvd's unless you work with images and image drive software like daemon tools or alcohol 120%.

If you do have a DVD-rom player you can play dvd's with Cyberlink Powerdvd or BS-player. Even with Windows Media Player.

It depends on the operating system you have.

Hope this was helpfull. If questions i am happy to answer.

No sound when playing dvds

This is very likely a codec problem. A codec is a software component used with video and audio players that translates the electronic media file into something that can be displayed. Most of the time, the video codec will be out of date and you'll hear the audio but not see any video. You've got the reverse problem, obviously.

Unfortunately, Microsoft does not make this easy. Even the latest download of codecs from Microsoft doesn't necessarily update the Windows Media Player to play any DVD. You will need to do a codec search and download the latest. Last time I checked, 'download.com' had them available (this is CNet's download website). Good luck!

The best step is take a backup on an external USB hardrive or burn it on DVDs . and then format the system.
If you have created two partition on the harddrive , backup the data on one and format the second and restore xp on it
