Hi jlhughes1757,
Good day to you! Since we are talking about Android OS here, I found that relying on the default Android program to manage your contacts is a bit complicated. Here is an easier and more comfortable way of managing your contacts, this will involve downloading a free app though in the Google Market.
1. Go to the Google Market
2. Search for DW Contacts and Phone and Dialer (actually I just typed "Contacts Manager" and it's part of the list).
3. Install the application.
4. Once the application is installed, just open it and you should be able to see that it already has read details of your existing phone contacts.
5. Select the "Contacts" link at the very bottom of the application window.
6. You'll see your contacts displayed now select the setting button on your android phone that opens up a menu of actions then select "Multi-select".
7. Your contacts should now have tickboxes on the far left of the app window. You need to manually select the ones you want to delete.
8. After selecting all contacts to be deleted, long press on any of the selected contacts and a pop-up menu should appear. Scroll to the middle of the menu and select "Delete Contacts".
9. You will be prompted with a message that says "Selected contacts will be deleted.". If you are sure, select "Ok" and the selected contacts will now be deleted.
I hope this helps!
