Question about Hobart A200 Stand Mixer
I have an OLD Hobart A200 mixer. It fell over backwards and cracked the cast metal bearing girdle. Is it possible to weld this back together? Is anyone sure if this is cast iron or steel?
I know this post is old, but hopefully someone doing a search for a similar problem will stumble across it and it will help them....Identifying the metal should be easy to do with fairly good accuracy. First, take a magnet to it. If its magnetic, then its some sort of ferrous metal, which is fine. If not, then its probably aluminum or stainless steel, both of which will have different welding procedures from ferrous metals. Then you need to determine if its cast or forged. By the sounds of it, you've done that part. Now we need to figure out if its cast iron or cast steel. Do a google search on doing a spark test on the metal, there are lots of good youtube vidoes that will show you exactly how to do it. If you have a tig welder, you can puddle a very small part and see if it hardens. If its cast iron, the bit you puddled will be hard as a ball bearing. You won't even be able to scar it with a metal file. If not, then its more than likely cast steel. If thats the case, weld away however you want. If its cast iron, there are issues to consider before you start. As a previously stated post said to heat it up cherry red, that is not always necessary and in a lot of cases it is not provided the part doesn't take a lot of pressure like a vise jaw would, for example. If you read this post and find your weldment problem to be cast iron, post back with your conditions and I will assist further.

Yes the cast can be welded(brazed). if you are able to weld this yourself, just remember before you can weld it, you have to heat it till it is cherry red then you can weld the piece. if your not qualified to weld it you can usually find a portable welding company to do this for you. hope this helps you please rate the solution...thanks
