I put generic (4inkjets.com) cartridges in my MFC240C, and it won't recognize the change. It doesn't seem to see that the cartridges have been pulled out, and then ask me if the cart. is 'new' when I either push them back in or actually change them. Now the black, which is not Low but Empty, does not see the new cartridge at all, and claims the black cart. is not in the slot.

I'll bet you're using cheap generic ink, after having used real Brother ink cartridges. It sees and it knows the ink is generic (apparently by measuring the electrical resistance of the ink). I'm in the midst of the same issue and am going to try using real Brother cartridges to see if the problem goes away.

I had the same problem, so I purchased a new MFC-685cw printer. The new printer comes with documentation that cautions against using 3rd party ink cartriges. In this document it shows photos of the sensor PC board contaminated with Ink. The Ink may be relatively low resistance so this board could be toast. I put Brother ink cartriges back in my machine and it did not work again, ever.

The reset button is actually the stop button or to put it another way the round red button with an upside down red triangle in it.. basically the chip in the cartridge made the machine register a cartridge has been installed but after you took it out and put it back in again the machine knew that another cartridge had been fitted but it could not reset itself so it asked you to....

Where do the ink cartriges on a brother mfc 5460cn fo

Your machine is equipped with an ink dot

counter. The ink dot counter automatically

monitors the level of ink in each of the 4

cartridges. When the machine detects an ink

cartridge is running out of ink, the machine

will tell you with a message on the LCD.

The LCD will tell you which ink cartridge is low

or needs replacing. Be sure to follow the LCD

prompts to replace the ink cartridges in the

correct order.

Even though the machine tells you that an ink

cartridge is empty, there will be a small

amount of ink left in the ink cartridge. It is

necessary to keep some ink in the ink

cartridge to prevent air from drying out and

damaging the print head assembly.

a Open the ink cartridge cover.

If one or more ink cartridges are empty,

for example Black, the LCD shows

Ink Empty Black and

Replace Ink.

b Pull the lock release lever down and

take out the ink cartridge for the color
shown on the LCD.

c Open the new ink cartridge bag for the

color shown on the LCD, and then take

out the ink cartridge.
d Remove the protective yellow cap (1).

Note

If the protective yellow caps come off

when you open the bag, the cartridge will

not be damaged.

e Each color has its own correct position.

Insert the ink cartridge in the direction of

the arrow on the label.

f Lift each lock release lever and push it

until it clicks, and then close the ink

cartridge cover.

g If you replaced an ink cartridge, the LCD

may ask you to verify that it was a brand

new one. (For example,

Did You Change Blck?) For each

new cartridge you installed, press 1

(Yes) to automatically reset the ink dot

counter for that color. If the ink cartridge

you installed is not a brand new one, be

sure to press 2 (No).

If you wait until the LCD shows

Near Empty and Ink Empty, the
machine will automatically.

You may have to reinsert the new cartridges, making sure to follow the machine prompts and press the up arrow key or 1 or + for each color cartridge you install. (See directions here. and here) Make sure the lock levers click when you insert the cartridge.
If you continue to have problems, see other support pages for your printer here and here.

Ink cartridge

Using some switch cleaner solvent, gently clean the contacts on the cartridge carriage, and also if you have any, use some inkjet cleaner to clean the nozzle where the cartridge sits, this should clean the mechanism sufficiently to allow the printer to detect the cartridge.

Epson Stylus C86 Printer Ink Refill

The chip that is located on the cartridge has to be reset also. You can take it to a ink cartridge replacement store. They will reset the chip when they refill the ink, however, Epson doesn't recommend this of course. It is cheaper this way.

I keep getting an error message- unable to clean....I just bought and installed new ink cartridges, and the machine is still having trouble - I cannot print at all now. There seems to be no way to clear...

The waistinktank has to be replaced. DO NOT only reset the code but change the waistinktank! Otherwise ink will flow into the machine and will cause serious damages!!!!!!!! See link how to do that: http://www.fixya.com/support/t202485-cleaning
