This was a weakness of the Montero Sport models. If you google Montero Sport 4WD light flashing you will find lots of information. The best troubleshooting article I have found is here:
http://4wd.blogeasy.com/article.view.run?articleID=318776 This article is about the Pajero, but the Montero Sport uses the same platform so this article applies.
The Montero Sport uses several switches and vacuum modules to put the system in and out of 4WD. If any of these malfunction, the light may flash continuously, flash intermittently, fail to come on, and it can trigger the anti-lock brake light to come on. In brief, if the 4WD shift lever is engaged, but the transfer case doesn't engage, the sensors show a mismatch and will cause the light to act funny including triggering the vehicle's anti-lock break light. These SUV's need to be shifted into 4WD
regularly to keep the switches and mechanisms working correctly.
Try this before you even think about a visit to the $$$$$ Mitsubishi Dealer:
Shift the 4WD lever between 4WD High, Low and 2WD at least 100 times. Often, this will free the mechanisms and resolve the problem. It worked for me after three years of trying everything else including the dealer replacing switches, etc. If this does fix it for you, just be sure to shift the vehicle in and out of 4WD several times at least one a week and this will keep the mechanisms lubricated and functioning correctly. If that doesn't work, try the above link (article). Good luck!

I have the same problem. One note, if I put it in 4 wheel drive, the 4 wheel light stays on (as it should). It only blinks in 2 wheel drive mode.
I have the same problem and my mechanic said when he checked info, the computer says all 5 sensors need to be replaced! Doesn't make sense!
Same. 4-wheel symbol sometimes blinks in 2-wheel, sometimes goes off in 4-wheel. Anti-lock brakes failure symbol comes on and I believe ABS is then not working.
My 2000 Montero Sport 3.0 4-wheel indicator sometimes blinks in 2-wheel, sometimes is off in 4-wheel. Also, ABS light sometimes comes on (and ABS is off). I wonder if all is caused by computer? Possibly resetting computer? (by disconnecting battery?)
Yes. We all have the same symptoms; 4WD like blinks in 2WD, but 4WD transfer is working fine; ABS light comes on, and yes, then the ABS is disabled by the computer.
I have noticed the ABS coming on when I stop while turning left, if that has anything to do with it - possibly sensors out of alignment?
hi left post about 4x4 lights flashing easy fix you can do it your self it will more than lightly be a rubber pipe.from the front axle the lower half is metal to the drivers side chase leg then rubber from there up check all three pipes for splits or blown off pipe very easy to miss split so take your time checking
