Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+ Logo
Anonymous Posted on Sep 25, 2011

I just installed a Sears Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door opener - it was working fine through adjustments until it closed too tight as I was doing the adjustments to keep the door closed. I disengaged, reset the door arm and tried to re-engage by running the opener but it just hums - the Cable side is dangerously tight and the motor unit won't release the tension, and the chain is sagging on the other side of the chain spreader / motor unit. Is there anyway to release the tension on the Motor unit manually? Or is there maybe another solution to my problem?

Pull down on the manual release rope. It may be hard to pull.

I did that, as I mentioned by 'disengaged' in my original post - and yes, it was hard to pull - it was really tightly closed! Ultimately, the problem was it just wouldn't go 'UP' - I ended up taking the back casing off the unit off and found that in doing my adjustments I had dis-lodged the 'up' adjustment plastic screw so popped it back into place & it worked again! Thanks anyway.

Use the emergency release handle to release the door. Run the opener to the open position until it stops. Close the door until it stops. Now re engage the the door.

Craftsman 1/3 hp garage door opener I bought a new one - my father installed it and the door will open half way - that is it.. then when you go to close it - it closes and then opens half way...

I hate to say this but it sounds like your father did not follow the instructions when he installed the opener. Try following these instructions.

Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket above the motor unit. With the door closed run the motor until the sprocket turns clockwise and stops. With everything attached replace and tighten the chain. Some adjusting of the up and down limits will probably be required.

My Craftsman garage door opener opens fine. It

It could be closing too far or the sensitivity could be set too sensitive.

Lube the springs, wd-40 rust may be the whole problem.

If the door hits and the opener continues to move until the rail flexes upward and then reverses - probably the travel adjustment.

Does the door close and stay closed if you hold the wall button down constant until it closes? - this would indicate a safety eye problem.

If the door reverses before it hits the floor or just as it hits the floor it could be the sensitivity or if the safety eyes are mounted to the track they could be flexing enough to move the eyes out of alignment.

Hope this helps.

Garage door only opens 4 inches then reverses and stops

you need to replace gear when the door is fully closed. then do your tweaking.

I have a craftsman garage door opener (1/2 hp) won't close proper

Check your door sensors. They have probably been bumped. Tweak them until they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.

Garage door opened, won't close

If you can press and hold the wall button and the door will go down, you have a photo eye issue. Check the photo eyes at the bottom of the door.
