Just found a solution to this problem (conveniently hidden on unlucky page 13 of the user manual). This means that your TV is in store mode... it refreshes every so often and changes to the different inputs to show store viewers the quality of different inputs.
First, go to Menu - Setup - Advanced Setup and make sure that the "Auto power on" is set to "No." Turn the TV off and unplug it. Plug it back in. Press and HOLD the power button on the TV (not the remote). Hold for 2-3 seconds or so... you'll hear a few clicks. Release the button, then press it. The first thing that pops up should be, "Select viewing environment." Make sure you select "Home." Continue with setup from there.

SOURCE: black box in middle of tv screen
This is a background for text, even though you aren't seeing any text at the time. Since it covers most of the screen, it sounds more like a demo mode screen than closed captioning. Go into your setup menu and make sure that neither of those is selected. If necessary, restore the factory settings. I'm assuming that this is coming from the tv itself, and that you don't have a VCR, Tivo, etc. Good luck!

If its a sony, the crt boards are whats causing the problem, they need to be reseated, its high voltage, best to have a tech do it.

Testimonial: "Thanks for the suggestion, I know there's a lot of juice in there, just dont know where. Better to let someone who knows handle it, from what you say"
