Question about RCA DCM425 DIGITAL CABLE MODEM (RCADCM425)

1 Answer

Is my modem a WiFi router?

I remember purchasing a WiFi router for my home about 6 years ago, and now I'm digging through boxes trying to find it. I've come across a RCA DCM 425 Digital Broadband modem box, and I'm not sure if this also helps with WiFi, or if I need to keep looking in other boxes. Can you please help?

Thank you.

Thank you "Marked". I've also just found a Qwest ActionTec which I know is a wireless router. I don't have service through Qwest any longer though. Will I still be able to connect with this ActionTec router?

    Thanks again.

This RCA DCM 425 is a cable modem only its not even a router, its just a plain cable modem that is being provided by some cable company like Cox and Comcast, try searching again for a different box there they have a brnad name of Linksys, Netgear or Dlink because those are the common manufacturer of wireless router ...

Hope that helps............

Yes, you can still use it again for a DSL internet connection like Verizon, SBC or bellsouth because that is a DSL modem....

Hi Kylie,
Before I suggest you solution for your question I need to be clear on some more detail on your Wifi network environment.
Please answer the following questions and revert back as soon as possible.
1) Have you forgotten the router login password / the wifi connect password?2) Switching On your Wifi in your MAC what are you getting? Is it connecting to the wifi?3) From which location is your mac giving problems connecting to the wifi? What is this location distance from your wifi router?4) Do you have any idea on IP addressing of the wifi network? If yes please mention the IP range/5) Specify exact Make and model Number of your Wifi Router.
Thank you for purchasing my service, hope i will be able to help you out if you reply back with the above detailing.

I want to replace RCA DCM425 cable modem with new, compatible device to continue feeding internet (by ethernet cable) to my desktop (like the present) and provide new WiFi to the home. Please advise. Thank...

You have two choices to achieve your goal (which I understand is to have both you desktop plugged by Ethernet and WiFi throughout your home) :

1. The cheapest way :
You need not be replacing your cable modem, but adding a router to it. There are numerous routers which are WiFi enabled. You can then plug your PC to the router and have WiFi.

2. The cleanest (but less cheap) way :
There are cable modems on the market which will do the job, like the Motorola SURFboard SBG900 DOCSIS 2.0 Wireless Cable Modem. Once plugged in place of your old modem, depending on your provider, you will either have to download and install the software for your new modem (which should be prompted on your PC when you try to access the Internet), or call the provider to activate the new modem.

How i can setup Wifi to Thomson (DCM305R) modem?

Hello, Thanks for the opportunity to help you.

First off you modem there is not wifi but cant be hooked up to a wifi router that you can purchase from any computer store.

The modem would hook up to the router directly instead of hooking to the computer via RJ45 "ethernet cable"

The wifi router would then share that connection. You would need to set that up with some security I recommend WPA 2 encryption you will need to select a password/ or pass phrase.

In order for me to give you the How To's we would need some more information such as:

1. Brand name of router
2. Model number

Click here for some basic information on how to hook up a cable modem to a wifi router.

Thanks for using Fixya.com , We hope your found this Very Helpful.

What type of wifi router should I buy

you can add any router you want. since the surfboard is just a modem, you can add any router you want. just make sure that after you plugin a router into the surfboard, that you disconnect the surfboard from it's power, wait 10 seconds and then reconnect the power. this is to let the surfboard see the router since it is known to remember it's last connected device.

As I understand it, you currently have a DSL line with a computer plugged into a modem that is attached to the DSL. Now, you want to use wireless throughout your home.

My choice of router manufacturer is Linksys though there are other manufacturers of wireless technology.

What ever manufacturer you choose, get the device. Hook it up according to the instructions you will find inside the device box.

It will go something like this: Attach a cat 5 cable from the "uplink" port on your router to the DSL modem. Plug your wired computer into any of the 4 other ports. Everything is off, right? Cycle the modem - wait for the lights to settle down. Plug in your new wireless, wait for the lights to settle. Turn on your computer. Turn on your wireless. Wou may have to connect using the windows wizard.

A tool I use for network management is Network Magic, a Cisco product. Cisco also owns LlinkSys.

Get the program, free download and eval period. After the eval period you may purchase or continue to use the product with some features disabled.

Cannot get wireless router to work with comcast

I hope your internet is working fine when you are connected directly through modem . As of my views you need to configure your newly purchased router first. Connect your router , see to that all the connection are appropriate . Your modem enthernet cable should be connected to your router and your router to desktop in this is the ideal connection .

now follow these steps .

1. click on LAN . Select TCP/IP config
2 . Click On properties .
3 . check the box " automatically recieve settings . Click on Ok and close it .
4 . Now to go to ur router page open a web browser . in address column type your gate way . I. E. for most of routers it is 192.168.1.1
and press enter
5 . it will prompt you to password , Your USER NAME AND PASSWORD is ADMIN .
6. in basic setup . Select AUTOMATIC DHCP ,
7. change your IP address to 192.168.1.10
8. save the settings and reboot .
9 . restart your system .
10. Your INTERNET should work .

Wifi

You need to purchase a wireless router. The router will have 5 ports on the back, one in and 4 out. The wire that you have going from your modem to your computer will go to the "in" port on the router. The out ports can be used for wired connections, and the wireless antenna will connect to any wireless computers.

Any computer that you want to connect wirelessly to your new router will need to be wireless-ready. For a desktop computer, you will need to buy and install a wireless PCI network card. Most laptops have built-in wireless.

You can buy a wireless router at most "big box" stores, like Best Buy, Office Depot, even WalMart sometimes carries them. A wireless router will cost between $75 and $150.

My 2wire router will not connect to my nintendo ds wifi system.

The DSi only works with WEP encryption. The 2Wire and most other newer routers use WPA encryption.

Simply logon to your router with a web browser. The default IP for it is 10.1.1.138 but it might be different, just check the manual or internet for the IP. Go to "Home Network" then "Advanced Settings" and change the security from WPA to WEP and save.

Thats it!

Hope that helps.
