My Hp Deskjet F4200 series printer will not scan anything to my computer, but it will copy just fine. How can I get it to scan? I have already uninstalled the printer driver & reinstalled it. It says...

Check to see that your Scanner drivers have been installed. Click on Start, then Printers and Faxes and see if a Scanner is listed. If not, you need to install the drivers.

Also, when you uninstall the printer drivers, you first need to disconnect the printer from the computer, and unplug the printer from the power source. Leave the printer unplugged for at least 15 minutes to clear the printer's cache memory.

Next, go to Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel and uninstall the printer software. Then, turn off your computer.

Next, reboot your computer. Place the Deskjet cd in the drive and follow instructions for reinstalling the printer software and drivers.
CAUTION: DO NOT PLUG IN YOUR PRINTER CABLE TO YOUR COMPUTER UNTIL PROMPTED BY THE INSTALL DISK!!

Lost cd

Lucky for you, there are a couple other things you can do to get your printer installed. People lose their printer installation disks all the time and because of that, manufacturers are implementing new methods that make everything easier. These days, most printer manufacturers are including downloads on their Web sites for the software and drivers that are needed to use their products.
So, if you've lost your printer installation disk, simply go to the manufacturer's Web site and look it up. For example, let's say you have an HP printer. For that, go to www.hp.com and click on the link that says Software and Driver Downloads. You can then choose the task you want to complete and enter in the type of printer you have. It even gives you examples to follow to make the whole process easier.
Once you find your printer type, just follow the rest of the directions and you'll be on your way to downloading exactly what you need. You can then install your printer with ease and go back to business as usual. As long as you have a fairly new printer, this method will work. Luckily, manufacturers have been doing this for awhile now, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding the type of printer you have.
Now, if you don't care for that method, there is one other thing you can do. You can contact your manufacturer and request a copy of your installation disk. Chances are, they'll refer you to their Web site, but if you'd really rather have a hard copy of the disk, they should be able to send you one in the mail. Of course, you will have to wait for it to arrive, but it can be done. If you're not in a big rush to get your printer installed, this may work better for you anyway. Otherwise, I would suggest getting what you need from the manufacturer's Web site.
Either way, you'll be able to install your printer and go on your merry way. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

XP says printer is seen as new hardware and won't go away

When you do a restore on those, yes, you load XP, then you have to run the drivers disk.
The trick is, after you restore windows, you have to install the chipset driver first.
Reboot
Then do sound, NIC (NIC has to be done manually), and video (don't worry about the USB drivers, they get taken care of in the windows updates)
Reboot
After all of that is in, do your windows updates (of course reboot again)
Then do windows update manually (START>Update Windows, Custom) and make sure to include hardware updates.
Once all of that is in, then attach the printer (don't turn it on) install the printer software, and turn the printer on when it tells you to.

Not doing the restore in this order will result in the errors you are getting.

The chipset drivers first is the key to the whole project.
(I've probably done 100+ of these).

I don't know if you can go back in now to do these steps, you might be better off, starting all over.

Try that, and let us know.

Ricoh ac204

You probably need the whole application to get it to work. Usually Ricohs use a memory resident program to control scanning functions. That way you can fax or scan to e-mail with them.

You can check on www.ricoh-usa.com to see if there is a Twain driver for that particular model.

Trying to instal photosmart C4380 all in one wirelessly on toshiba L40-17M from supplied disc installed printer ok first time but scanner not recognised, scan button says computer connected but computer...

Photosmart C4380: good hardware, appalling software. Shameful that it's on the market at all.

WIRELESS PROBLEM

You have to install the printer as USB first. Then, once it's all installed, load up the CD again and 'Add device', choosing the wireless option. It's crucial that you leave your USB cable in the whole time. Take it out right at the end. Once you've added a device, you'll have two printers installed. One will be called 'Copy 1' - that's the wireless one. It should all work okay, and you can delete the USB one.

SCAN PROBLEM AND ERROR MESSAGES

When I did this everything seemed to work fine. BUT - after a wee while the software started playing up. The scan function didn't work at all, HP was depositing all sorts of bugs all over my computer, I had error messages coming up at shutdown, all sorts of gremlins.

So this is what I did.

I totally uninstalled all HP software.

I downloaded the updated Photosmart Basic Drivers from the HP website. They are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3221646&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=11&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=us

Once you've downloaded the file and run it, the new drivers will be installed but NO SOFTWARE. Again, you have to do the whole setting it up as USB and then leaving the cable in and adding the device wirelessly. But if you do this with the HP drivers and ignore the installation CD, then everything should work perfectly.

Of course this means no HP software at all. But who needs it? I use Microsoft's scanning software, which is fine, and it has no problem printing.

Basically HP's software is BLOATWARE that doesn't even work. It screws up your computer.

Good luck!!
